Natural Diet Supplement: Dealing With Hay Fever

This time of year can be a nuisance for those who suffer from hay fever. There are ways, such as a natural diet supplement, to offset the problems but what is hay fever and what are the other methods of dealing with it?

Hay fever is an allergy to pollen particles and varies according to which type of pollen affects you. The time of high risk lasts from the spring right through the summer.

The numbers of people suffering from hay fever has increased by 30% in the four years up to 2005 but there may be even more sufferers who sort the problem out for themselves. The figures were published in the British Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine and were the result of a study of nine million people on a General Practitioners database.

The reasons for the increase are not clear but may have something to do with the fact that we are exposed to less infection when younger so have less immunity.

It is possible for hay fever sufferers to develop asthma if the condition stays untreated.

There are a wide variety of treatments available and the most popular are antihistamine tablets and sprays but there are concerns in the medical profession that these are not suitable for everyone. Also available are steroid injections, which control the symptoms but these are discouraged now as they are linked to cataracts, skin thinning and even osteoporosis.

Practical steps can be taken too, including wearing wrap-around sunglasses to prevent pollen getting into the eyes, avoiding large expanses of grass, not mowing the lawn yourself and closing windows, especially during times of high pollen levels (generally mid-morning and early evening).

One way to deal with hay fever is to increase the effectiveness of your immune system with a good natural diet supplement. Proto-col are offering a large tub of their marvellous green magic superfood with a supply of the opti-msm immune system stimulant for a discount price of £64.95 (a saving of £14.95).

Collagen Capsule: Interview With A Young Athlete

16-year-old Anna Alexander-Holmes is not your average teenager.  Studying for her exams in the hope of a career working with children, Anna spends over 20 hours each week training for competitions and trials all over the country.

Taking time out of her busy schedule to visit the proto-col office, Anna was kind enough to give us an insight into her life. Proto-col’s Winnie Howard-Taylor asked Anna to explain in more detail the heptathlon and what her training involved.

A: It’s made up of 7 different events: I do the high jump, the long jump, shot put, the javelin, 200 metres, 800 metres and an 80 metre hurdle. I have always been good at sprinting so the 200 metres is probably my favourite event but the high jump is my strongest. During training I focus on technique and I practice these to perfection, which is something I love to do.

W: Wow, that’s an impressive line-up. To be good at one thing is a blessing, how did you find out you had a talent for 7?

A: I don’t know really. I have always been quite sporty. When I was 12 I competed in a pole vault competition. After the event I was approached by Brett Smith – he was the manager at that point for Team Bath. He just came up to me and asked me to join, he said I had a vast amount of talent and that’s where it all kicked off. I loved it, everything about it made me want to train more and more. The social side, the competitive side; it was all so much fun at that age. It still is now!

At this point Anna’s smile is wide, her passion for being active is clear. She doesn’t have a lot of social time outside school/training hours to be herself but she assures me that even she has time for a facial routine.

A: I use proto-col skincare products on my face. The microdermabrasion keeps my skin soft and smooth.

I use the mineral foundation all the time and I love the mascara. Proto-col black mascara is water resistant and lasts through school and training. I started using proto-col collagen first as I had heard about its benefits for your bones.

In February 2010, during the indoor season I started getting consistent pains in both my legs. I continued training for 4 months in the hope it would just go away but during a 200-metre event, mid-race the pain started and that was it. I could not complete the race, my legs felt like they were going to snap! It turns out I had level 2 bone stresses in both Tibia. I had to have 2 MRI scans and could hardly move. I spent 5 months in pain, sat around at home and it was a low time for me. I began taking collagen capsules; I take 3-6 capsules a day. The benefits were brilliant, my body began to repair at a fast pace and my bones are stronger now and the pain reduced. At the moment I notice that my legs get less sore and I can train for longer. I also take 2 glasses of green magic a day to keep healthy and energetic.  3 tablets of proto-col vita balance a day keeps a steady energy level. I take both green magic and vita balance in the mornings, which I have found makes it easier to get up early and I’m much happier in myself. It definitely helps me to juggle school, my exams and training.

As for sports nutrition, proto-col ultra-fuel works wonders. It contains Creatine, which is great for the gym.

W: So, no chance of anything getting in the way of your dreams no then – you seem to have recovered from your injuries and have come back with a vengeance!

A: Yes, it was a tough time and looking back if I had continued with the race I may have fractured both my Tibia. It is something I love so I had to get myself back into it and now I’m better than ever.

I have only been back in full training since April 2011 and I have already competed in some important competitions. I have the South West Championship trials at Millfield School in June with Team Bath.

I have a scholarship to attend in September to study. It is a brilliant opportunity for me; it will be a very personal level of education, specific to me. There will only be about 6 people per class, in academia as well as physical training. Coming up I have the English Schools’ Athletic Association (ESAA) event 17th – 18th September, which is a big achievement and may well be my first event after starting at Millfield.

W: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

A: I’m hoping that after my 2 years at Millfield School, I can move abroad somewhere and work with children. I would love to be a coach or sports teacher. After watching the Sports Relief show on television I was really inspired. I would love to make a difference like that!

Although Anna has not been training intensively and is still taking supplements to strengthen her legs, she never fails to put her best into each and every competition she enters. On Sunday 22nd May she jumped a personal best. Now ranked as number 1 in the South West and in the top 20 (UK) under 17 girls, Ann is ambitious and passionate despite her age and at proto-col we want to wish her every success for the future.

Tips To Beautiful Skin: Sugar And Your Skin

We all know about the damage to the skin created by alcohol, smoking and the sun but did you know one of the healthy skin tips we should follow is to avoid consuming excess sugar?

Of course the body needs some sugar for energy but too often we eat sugary foods and drinks that provide amounts in excess of our requirements. Interestingly sugar molecules will attach themselves to proteins and create a damaging process called glycation. This takes place where there is a lack of enzymes, which usually control the damage caused by sugar.

The type of sugar consumed makes a difference too. Fructose and galactose have ten times the glycation activity of glucose. The reactions are slow but end up as advanced glycation end products (or AGEs). It is these AGEs that cause the trouble as they can lead to heart disease, deafness, cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease. In other words, an excess of sugar accelerates the sign of ageing.

You will not be surprised therefore to learn that glycation damages the proteins (collagen) in the skin so leading to yet more wrinkles. This happens in two ways; the AGEs reduce the abilities of collagen to rebuild the skin and also they increase the rate at which collagen breaks down.

So the best way to keep your collagen health is to lay off the sugary foods and perhaps take a collagen capsule course.

Natural Diet Supplement: Nutrition In Developing Countries

As populations become more affluent you would expect their nutrition to improve and so they would not need a natural diet supplement.

The inlive.in.com website however reports a talk given to the National Priorities in Nutrition Research conference in Hydrabad recently by Dr B Sesikeran of the Indian National Institute of Nutrition.

In his talk, Dr Sesikeran outlined a change in food habits as people’s socio-economic status improves but the signs are that nutrition does not necessarily get better. It seems Indian consumers are turning to packaged convenience foods for their affordability and as a result of consumers being open to marketing.

A new affluent lifestyle also has repercussions in terms of reduced physical activity, which suggests that obesity and heart disease may be on the increase.

It seems the affluence has brought with it a new range of diseases.

Perhaps more people are going to need to take a natural diet supplement after all.

Healthy Skin Tips: Caring For Your Feet

One of the best healthy skin tips we can use is to look after your feet.

The great comedian Tommy Cooper used to tell this joke: ‘My feet are killing me – every night they grab me around the throat.’

How many times have we used the expression ‘my feet are killing me?’ We take care of the skin on all other parts of the body and neglect our feet. Yet think how much use our feet get during the day.

To be healthy we need exercise and often this involves pounding the feet on the ground. Many of us have jobs that require us to stand up much of the day or at least to walk from one place to another regularly.

In the same way that it makes sense to look after the tyres on a car (as the only contact we have with the road), we owe it to our feet to keep them in good condition. There are several conditions, such as Athletes Foot, blister, corns and bunions, which can affect the health of our feet.

We would notice if we could not use them so here are some healthy skin tips to help your feet.

Soak your feet in warm, soapy water every day. This will help soothe the aches and soften the skin, at least temporarily. In the past I have undertaken a fair amount of hill walking and soaking the feet after a long walk was always a delight.

Infection develops where there is dry skin and cracks so it is a good idea to remove dead skin cells by using a pumice stone or a foot scrub.

To finish the pampering of your feet, moisturize the soles as these do not have oil glands and of course get the most abuse during the day.

A great way to look after your feet is to use Proto-col Instant Pedicure as this contains Dead Sea salts to remove the dead skin cells, Lemongrass as an antiperspirant, the anti-fungal treatment tea tree oil and various natural oils to ease and moisturise the feet.
