Health And Nutrition Articles: Will The Olympics Make Us All Fit?

The London 2012 Olympics have ended and the Paralympic Games are just about to start. The unprecedented interest in this year’s events have raised hope in some quarters that there will be a move from many people to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.

It is needed too. With overweight and obesity reaching epidemic proportions in America and the United KIngdom, with related problems such as diabetes and heart disease, and some 83% of the UK population estimated to be getting less than the recommended level of exercise, a great many people are in need of encouragement.

And yet the messages from the Olympics are not always promoting ways to have a healthy lifestylein the ways one would expect. One of the problems is the sponsors of the Games; McDonalds are one of the events sponsors and boast they have built their largest restaurant ever in the Olympic Park in London. Another sponsor is the Coca-Cola Corporation, hardly one of the greatest providers of health foods, and Cadburys are the ‘Official Treat Provider’ too.

However, there is a move to encourage more activity as a result of the Olympic Games. Several sports are reporting an increase in interest from the general public; Judo Silver medallist, Gemma Gibbons, has reported a surge in interest in the sport following her win and the British Volleyball website has seen an 850% increase in hits. But most of the successful athletes have already started to encourage others to follow them into sport and their victory parades in various local towns since the Games can only help further.

And we have not even started the Paralympic Games yet…

Collagen Benefits: Our Modern Loss Of Collagen

Collagen benefits the human body in many ways, not least in the strengthening of connective tissues, such as cartilage and ligaments. Athletes have noticed the benefits of collagen after they have damaged connective tissues and have been put on a course of collagen capsules to rebuild the damage.

As we get older we lose collagen in our bodies and so our skin and joints start to suffer. Osteoarthritis is becoming a serious problem in many ageing people in the world. It has been estimated that one in three people in the USA suffer from this condition, brought about by the deterioration of the tissues around the joint. In particular the cartilage that covers and cushions the bones in a joint wears away and bone grates upon bone. Obviously this causes the bones to erode.

Equally, obesity and being overweight is a very modern problem. A recent US study, named National Health and Nutrition Survey III, found that between 1999-2000 65% of Americans were overweight and 31% obese. Six out of every ten children are either overweight or obese. We can expect a similar reading in several other countries.

Extra body weight places extra stress on the joints and, if the levels of collagen are already reducing (perhaps through ageing, heredity, stress or other medical conditions), the deterioration of movement and increase in pain will be pronounced. Sadly a lack of vitamins in our food can only help to damage the body’s ability to repair any damage and, as much obesity also comes from consumption of low-nutrition fast foods, this can only make things even worse.

Not surprisingly, an increasing number of men and women are looking for ways to have a healthy lifestyle and around half of woman over the age of 50 are taking vitamin supplements regularly. Around 40% of men are doing the same.

Some supplements have been shown to have a beneficial effect of joint disease, including omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, ginger, gamma-linolenic acid and chondrotin sulfate. Dr. Kristine Clark of Pennsylvania State University has noted the benefits of collagen hydrolysate on the symptoms and may indeed increase cartilage regeneration.

Bear in mind that any nutrition supplements will only help improve health when used in other ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, such as moderate exercise, weight reduction and a balanced healthy diet.

Proto-col presently offer a three-for-two offer on their range of collagen hydrolysate capsules. Discover more at LookRavishing.com.

Healthy Makeup For Skin: Looking Healthy At Work

We all love to look good and one of the places we are seen by most people is at work. Healthy skin tipsare always welcome, especially when they make us look good as we work at our jobs.

Being seen at our best, looking and feeling ravishing, has lots of advantages at work. Studies show that employees who look at their best tend to get the better jobs and opportunities. Those who look attractive tend to get paid more too (one author suggests 3 or 4% more).

Of course we should not always judge people by their looks, but the reality is that we are judged in this way. Sir Richard Branson put it this way, “Never judge people by appearance, but remember that everyone else does.”

We can help ourselves by ensuring our clothes are the most suitable and that we appear neat and well groomed but are their any healthy skin tips to help us further?

We can help ourselves by ensuring we are hydrated all day. This will help our body function properly and ensure the skin looks plump and healthy. It also helps keep energy levels up. We don’t need to drink lots of water though as eating most fruit will also provide lots of hydration.

Wear mineral makeup powder as this provides nutrition for your skin and will not clog the pores (the cause of most acne). By mixing powders you can also match the colour to your complexion and the skin-friendly characteristics mean mineral makeup powder can be worn all day with few or no problems.

Use your breaks and off-time constructively. During breaks at work, you might consider using a moisturiser to keep your look and maybe it would worth keeping a toner handy too. Once you get home in the evening, make sure you allocate enough time to sleep. This will enable your skin to recover from the day’s stresses and will restore your energy levels for the day to come. Whatever you do, relaxation time is important too; take time out for a good gossip around the water fountain, with the family at home or with fellow commuters.

Above all, keep the stress levels low. A smile is always the best of the healthy skin tips and helps the workday pass by smoothly.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 10: Get Enough Sleep

Young Woman Asleep In Bed At Sunrise

It looks like finding one of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is easier than you might expect. One of the most important beauty tips you can come across is simply to get more sleep.

Yup, your skin will thank you for getting enough shut-eye each night. We all know days after late nights when we look in the mirror and are faced with puffy and saggy eyes. The body uses sleep time to regenerate – and that includes the skin.

I was at a major hospital recently as the sun set and was amazed to see lots of maintenance workers coming out and repairing all those jobs that were reported to them during the day. Your skin is the same: as you sleep, the body’s priorities turn to growth and repairs. If you have drunk enough water, the skin will be moisturised from within. The damage caused during the day by pollution will be repaired.

Studies have compared photographs of people who have had enough sleep and those that hadn’t and every time the pictures of the good sleepers were seen as more attractive.

Of course, sleep won’t solve everything but a nice night of Z’s will give you a major start the next day. And you will feel good too.

What’s not to like? Sleep has to be one of the best healthy skin tips.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 9: Laugh Yourself Beautiful

There are a great many ways to lead a healthy lifestyle and there are plenty of healthy skin tipsavailable but one of the most neglected ideas is to be happy and laugh.

Laughter does wonders for your general health and well-being. This in turn keeps you healthy and looking good.

We all know that we feel good after a period of laughter. This is because stress and laughter cannot exist together. Laugh and stress disappears. Also laughing produces endorphins that boost the immune system and can even reduce pain.

Laugh out loud and you will increase the blood flow and give your lungs a much-needed session of deep breathing. This in turn is good for the heart and other essential bodily functions. Your skin may show laughter lines but the general health of your complexion will improve.

Having a good guffaw has more wide-ranging effects too. Relationships will be stronger and more relaxed if you learn to laugh together also you will put minor setbacks into perspective. People are drawn to someone with a good sense of humour.

Encourage humour in your life. There are classes in Laughter Yoga available in many areas where you are taught to have a good chuckle and encourage the benefits. Watch a funny film and generate banter with family and friends and you will find life gets much better.
