With the advent of a new year, we continue our examination of ways to lead a healthy lifestyle in the months ahead.

Becoming more active and eating correctly are certainly two of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle but it is also important to learn to relax. Stress can take its toll on our bodies; the HiFit.co.uk website tells us that it can contribute to heart disease, mental health problems and even memory failure. Finding time to relax every day take the pressure off our minds and bodies. Relaxing helps us think more clearly and make decisions calmly.

Different people find different ways to relax but popular solutions include taking a walk, soaking in a warm bath or sitting in your favourite chair listening to calming music. Many watch television to relax but I believe this does not always work. The news coverage on television can add to our stress and increasingly programming includes dramas that are far from relaxing. Comedy is such a good antidote to the pressures of life so find a simple and innocent comedy movie and allow yourself to laugh. The Carry On films, Naked Gun, Benny Hill and Dads Army are particular favourites of mine but there are many others.

Laughing is so important to our lives and is certainly one of the best ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. Laughter relaxes the whole body: it boosts the immune system, protects the heart by improving blood flow, helps your breathing, and floods the body with endorphins, the natural drugs that lead to an overall feeling of well-being. But you don’t have to rely on television (or radio) to provide the comedy. Spend time with family and friends and learn to laugh at life and you will relax and feel so much better.

Relaxation is not just about chilling out therefore. One of the best ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is to take an interest in life. Find a hobby or interest away from work. Painting and drawing is certainly a great way to unwind but then so is gardening. Indeed, the range of hobbies you could have is wide and varied and could include volunteering for a charity or other worthy organization. Whatever you choose, diverting your mind from daily stress is certainly one of the best ways to improve your health in the New Year.

In the same way that relaxation is one of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, sleep is essential to health. During the night the body uses the time to grow and repair. Too little sleep initially leads to headaches and impaired judgment but research has also shown a connection to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression. It is clear then that a good nights sleep does more than make us feel good. Most of us need around seven to eight hours of shuteye (why not experiment to find your preference). Set aside the time to get the sleep you need and I find it is worth having a set routine leading to bed to help me get the rest I need.

A good evening routine will program your mind and body. Personally I find a warm bath, a good book and a glass of milk before settling down helps. Listen to the same piece of soothing music as you snuggle down every night: do this enough times and you will no longer hear the last half of the music since you will already be asleep. Eating too late in the day and watching too much television too late will affect the effectiveness of your sleep and I find I cannot sleep soon after driving a car (my mind is still alert).

The other ways to lead a healthy lifestyle already mentioned (diet and exercise) will also help you sleep well. Limit your intake of caffeine and you will feel better and sleep better too: indeed, if you get enough rest you will not feel the need for caffeine. Equally, getting enough exercise during the day will help you sleep. The best night’s rest will come after a day when you have given your all and fall into bed exhausted and fulfilled.

It hardly needs to be said that, if you want to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, you will give yourself a head start if you can avoid smoking, drugs and excess alcohol. Introducing any substance that needs not be in your body is likely to upset its balance and affect the optimum running of it’s natural functions. For this reason, any of the ways you employ to be more healthy need to work with the body.

The ways to lead a healthy lifestyle need to work together – a holistic approach – to get the best effects. Do this and you will find you will experience less illness, be more effective, perform to your best and feel a great deal better. This leaves cycling and walking, which are great exercise but importantly can be easily built into the day’s routine.

If you are like me you might struggle to find the time to exercise every day. Walking and cycling however can fit easily into the day. If you have an appointment a mile or two away, leave the car and walk or cycle instead. Make it a rule never to use the car for short journeys. Doing the same for the trip to work if you can will get you fit very quickly and must be one of the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle. But why stop there? If you visit the shops by car, park at the far end of the car park (where most empty spaces are) and walk a little further. Most of us park as close to the door as we can but parking further out will help your health no end.

Two more of the benefits of choosing an outdoors sport or activity as one of the ways to have a healthy lifestyle are sunshine and fresh air. Stay indoors and you are breathing stale air but go outside and the fresh air will encourage you to breathe deeply, so expanding the lungs. Being outdoors also has beneficial psychological effects. Sunshine in particular has been shown to reduce depression through the production of the body’s natural endorphin anti-depressants. Even a good brisk walk in the cold, sun or rain can provide a surprisingly positive outlook on life. In my experience getting out in all weathers (wearing the correct clothing) reduces the depressive effects of dull days.

There seems to be no doubt that taking exercise whenever we can is one of the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle. The satisfaction you get from moderate exercise and the optimum weight you will achieve will change your outlook considerably – and, done sensibly, you will have less illness.

Ways To Lead A Healthy Lifestyle: Taking Care Over What We Eat

Once again we greet a new year and once again we reflect on how we could have done things better over the last twelve months. I suspect many of us will be looking for ways to lead a healthy lifestyle in the future and will be setting our New Year resolutions accordingly.

The other day I had a conversation with the proprietor of a local gymnasium and he was telling me how he loves this time of year. It seems there is a huge surge in membership applications from people joining his club trying to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle in the year ahead. What such businessmen love is a large proportion of the people who sign up use the facilities once or twice and then stop going. Many of them forget to cancel their membership as they fool themselves they will start going again when the situation is right.

At the same time, a great deal of us looking for ways to lead a healthy lifestyle will be signing up to various diet fads and may even be losing weight as a result. Statistics have shown that around 50% of women and 25% of men are following a restrictive diet and the weight loss industry in the USA alone is worth around $40 billion a year. Sadly there are problems with this way of life. Firstly many people who come off a diet frequently gain the weight they previously lost and many diets leave the dieter short on essential nutrients.

So what is one of the best ways to lead a healthy lifestyle? Actually the answer is, and always has been, to change to living a balanced life with a combination of the right diet, exercise and, well, just living sensibly.

What does this mean to our daily diet?

Many dieters, in trying to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, work against the needs of their bodies. To be most effective we need to work with our bodies. Firstly we need to eat a balanced diet including a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables. The human body works best when it is receiving all the vitamins and minerals it needs to support all its functions. We need to eat three meals a day and include a balanced selection of foods that provide the goodness our body needs.

This of course requires discipline and the first of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is to ensure we make breakfast the most important meal of the day, If you think about it, what we eat early in the day has time to provide the energy for the day and any excess is burnt off before we go to bed. For this reason, lunch should be reasonably substantial too but the last meal of the day (dinner or supper) should be light. My own experience has shown that eating too much too late in the day can actually prevent my getting a good nights sleep. The old adage ‘Breakfast like a king, lunch like a Prince, dine like a pauper’ has always been true.

It is important to ensure we have the nutrients the body needs to work effectively. In particular the immune system deserves to be kept at it’s best to fight off any diseases that might attack. Recent research suggests that the immune system may even destroy up to 90% of cancers before we are even aware of them. There is a school of thought that believes most diseases and medical conditions become a problem through bad nutrition.

Dieters can also sadly and ironically affect their health in their quest to lead what they see as ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. Eating disorders are becoming all too common among both men and women. The BBC report that hospital admissions for eating disorders rose by 16% last year as we pursue the ‘perfect’ body. Yet, in my opinion, the perfect body for each person is best achieved through the suggestions I am making today.

It is worth researching the food you eat and discovering how it can contribute to the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Understanding what we eat is part of the battle. Using organic, unadulterated fresh foods has to be good for us, particularly as the ill effects of pesticides, additives and other chemicals has yet to be fully understood, and I am concerned about putting alien substances through our bodies. For this reason I buy most of what I eat from local farm shops and farmers markets. By far the best way to ensure the quality of the food you eat is to grow your own: you also gain a certain satisfaction too.
