We all want to look beautiful naturally but sometimes it can be hard, especially when we struggle keeping our skin moist and healthy. Dry skin can be a real curse so what causes it and how can we deal with it?

This time of year in the northern hemisphere we are just coming out of winter (although it doesn’t seem like it here yet!). The cold weather we experience in winter is responsible for causing dry skin. Low temperatures and wind take the moisture from the skin and cause it to wrinkle and crack.

In the cold weather the natural reaction is to dive indoors and turn the heating up or perhaps sit by a roaring fire. Sadly even this does not help us to keep our skin healthy or help us to look beautifully naturally. These sources of heat remove the moisture from the air and cause dry skin again.

Even in the warmer weather our skin can dry out. Once the temperatures start to increase, the air gets drier and saps the moisture. If we then make the mistake of spending too long in the sun, the ultraviolet rays can dry out and burn the skin leading to premature ageing with it’s attendant wrinkling and sagging.

The answer is to create a barrier to the cold weather using a warm hat, scarf and gloves or to combat hot weather and the suns rays with a floppy hat and sun blocking cream. Every evening before we go to bed, a good moisturiser should be applied to affected areas (including the lips) to help restore visible health.

If the dryness is a particular problem then it would be worth applying moisturiser at other times too, such as when you get up in the morning too.

Be careful having hot showers and baths too as these can also dry out the skin. Have a less hot bathe and reduce the time you spend in the shower or bath.

Be careful what soap you use as harsh detergents can also have a detrimental effect. A good quality soap designed for dry skin will moisturise as it cleans.

Equally rubbing your skin dry will actually remove moisture. Pat it dry with a soft towel and your skin will take in the moisture it needs and you will remove the excess.

Other causes of dry skin include ageing, excess alcohol and various skin diseases and conditions.

In the case of skin conditions, such as dermatitis or psoriasis, it would be worth consulting a medical professional for specialist treatment to help you look beautiful naturally.

Obviously the way to combat alcohol-induced problems is to reduce your intake. However alcohol disturbs your body’s nutrition so it would be wise to increase your intake of vitamins and minerals with a good quality multi-vitamin supplement. Make sure especially that vitamins C, A and the B vitamins are included, as well as zinc, as these are a particular problem.

To reduce the dryness of skin that age brings with it, get into the habit of using a good quality skin cream first thing in the morning and last thing at night and ensure your nutritional intake is at its optimum level.

A recent report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. has shown that more and more people are set to discover the benefits of collagen as a way to improve their health. But it is not only ageing that affects the level of collagen in the skin. An excess of exposure to Ultra Violet rays (such as in the sun) leads to premature ageing or ‘photoaging,’ with the increase of wrinkles, dryness, thinning, sagging and bruising in the skin.

A study published in the International Journal of Dermatology in 2002 reported that wrinkling had been recorded in the facial skin of cigarette smokers as young as 20 years old. Research shows that smoking damages the level of collagen in our skin too. A person who smokes ten cigarettes a day for ten years is more likely to lose their skin health than someone who does not smoke at all.

Professor Greg Whyte, senior physiologist at Liverpool University, advises the British Olympic Team and is frequently called upon to advise celebrities undertaking difficult challenges on television. He has no doubt about the benefits of collagen: “We need it for healthy joints, physical resilience and the ability to recover from injuries.” He tells us that we lose 1.5% of our collagen each year after the age of twenty-five. This means we have lost thirty percent by the age of forty and the benefits of collagen are also lost to us.

It is hardly surprising therefore that the GIA report shows that more and more of us are seeking products that restore the benefits of collagen as we get older.

Becoming more active and eating correctly are certainly two of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle but it is also important to learn to relax. Whatever you choose, diverting your mind from daily stress is certainly one of the best ways to improve your health in the New Year.

In the same way that relaxation is one of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, sleep is essential to health. During the night the body uses the time to grow and repair. Too little sleep initially leads to headaches and impaired judgment but research has also shown a connection to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and depression. It is clear then that a good nights sleep does more than make us feel good. Most of us need around seven to eight hours of shuteye (why not experiment to find your preference). Set aside the time to get the sleep you need and I find it is worth having a set routine leading to bed to help me get the rest I need.

A good evening routine will program your mind and body. Personally I find a warm bath, a good book and a glass of milk before settling down helps. Listen to the same piece of soothing music as you snuggle down every night: do this enough times and you will no longer hear the last half of the music since you will already be asleep. Eating too late in the day and watching too much television too late will affect the effectiveness of your sleep and I find I cannot sleep soon after driving a car (my mind is still alert).

The other ways to lead a healthy lifestyle already mentioned (diet and exercise) will also help you sleep well. Limit your intake of caffeine and you will feel better and sleep better too: indeed, if you get enough rest you will not feel the need for caffeine. Equally, getting enough exercise during the day will help you sleep. The best night’s rest will come after a day when you have given your all and fall into bed exhausted and fulfilled.

It hardly needs to be said that, if you want to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, you will give yourself a head start if you can avoid smoking, drugs and excess alcohol. Introducing any substance that needs not be in your body is likely to upset its balance and affect the optimum running of it’s natural functions. For this reason, any of the ways you employ to be more healthy need to work with the body.

The ways to lead a healthy lifestyle need to work together – a holistic approach – to get the best effects. If you have an appointment a mile or two away, leave the car and walk or cycle instead. Make it a rule never to use the car for short journeys. Doing the same for the trip to work if you can will get you fit very quickly and must be one of the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle. But why stop there? If you visit the shops by car, park at the far end of the car park (where most empty spaces are) and walk a little further. Most of us park as close to the door as we can but parking further out will help your health no end.

In my experience getting out in all weathers (wearing the correct clothing) reduces the depressive effects of dull days.

There seems to be no doubt that taking exercise whenever we can is one of the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle. The satisfaction you get from moderate exercise and the optimum weight you will achieve will change your outlook considerably – and, done sensibly, you will have less illness.

Once again we greet a new year and once again we reflect on how we could have done things better over the last twelve months. I suspect many of us will be looking for ways to lead a healthy lifestyle in the future and will be setting our New Year resolutions accordingly.

The other day I had a conversation with the proprietor of a local gymnasium and he was telling me how he loves this time of year. It seems there is a huge surge in membership applications from people joining his club trying to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle in the year ahead. What such businessmen love is a large proportion of the people who sign up use the facilities once or twice and then stop going. Many of them forget to cancel their membership as they fool themselves they will start going again when the situation is right.

At the same time, a great deal of us looking for ways to lead a healthy lifestyle will be signing up to various diet fads and may even be losing weight as a result. Statistics have shown that around 50% of women and 25% of men are following a restrictive diet and the weight loss industry in the USA alone is worth around $40 billion a year. Sadly there are problems with this way of life. Firstly many people who come off a diet frequently gain the weight they previously lost and many diets leave the dieter short on essential nutrients.

So what is one of the best ways to lead a healthy lifestyle? Actually the answer is, and always has been, to change to living a balanced life with a combination of the right diet, exercise and, well, just living sensibly.

What does this mean to our daily diet?

Many dieters, in trying to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, work against the needs of their bodies. To be most effective we need to work with our bodies. Firstly we need to eat a balanced diet including a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables. The human body works best when it is receiving all the vitamins and minerals it needs to support all its functions. We need to eat three meals a day and include a balanced selection of foods that provide the goodness our body needs.

This of course requires discipline and the first of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is to ensure we make breakfast the most important meal of the day, If you think about it, what we eat early in the day has time to provide the energy for the day and any excess is burnt off before we go to bed. For this reason, lunch should be reasonably substantial too but the last meal of the day (dinner or supper) should be light. My own experience has shown that eating too much too late in the day can actually prevent my getting a good nights sleep. The old adage ‘Breakfast like a king, lunch like a Prince, dine like a pauper’ has always been true.

It is important to ensure we have the nutrients the body needs to work effectively. In particular the immune system deserves to be kept at it’s best to fight off any diseases that might attack.
