The London 2012 Olympics have ended and the Paralympic Games are just about to start. The unprecedented interest in this year’s events have raised hope in some quarters that there will be a move from many people to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.

It is needed too. With overweight and obesity reaching epidemic proportions in America and the United KIngdom, with related problems such as diabetes and heart disease, and some 83% of the UK population estimated to be getting less than the recommended level of exercise, a great many people are in need of encouragement.

One of the problems is the sponsors of the Games; McDonalds are one of the events sponsors and boast they have built their largest restaurant ever in the Olympic Park in London. Another sponsor is the Coca-Cola Corporation, hardly one of the greatest providers of health foods, and Cadburys are the ‘Official Treat Provider’ too.

However, there is a move to encourage more activity as a result of the Olympic Games. Several sports are reporting an increase in interest from the general public; Judo Silver medallist, Gemma Gibbons, has reported a surge in interest in the sport following her win and the British Volleyball website has seen an 850% increase in hits. But most of the successful athletes have already started to encourage others to follow them into sport and their victory parades in various local towns since the Games can only help further.

And we have not even started the Paralympic Games yet…

Nutritional Health Supplements: A Lack Of Vitamin D

Recent news has underlined the need for taking daily nutritional health supplements. The Chief Medical Officer for England, Dame Sally Davies, has been reported as concerned that medical professionals are not advising patients to ensure their intake of vitamin D is maintained.

Rickets, once a disease thought to be virtually eradicated, has started to appear in children once more. This condition causes the bones of children to become weaker and softer and leads to weak muscles, bowed legs, reduced growth and pain. It is directly attributed to a lack of vitamin D and calcium and is best treated of avoided by taking a good natural diet supplement.

There is a similar condition called osteomatacia sometimes found in adults.

Vitamin D can be absorbed from sunlight or oily fish (such as sardines, tuna, mackerel and salmon) or even egg yolks. Generally rickets is found in countries with less sunshine than others. Babies receive vitamin D from their mother’s milk but can suffer if their mother is also lacking in this vitamin.

At one stage the incidence of rickets was less than 1 in 1000 children but new research suggests this may now have increased to 1 in 4 toddlers. Previous generations recommended children take a daily dose of cod liver oil to avoid the problem but sadly this practice has been largely discontinued.

To add to the debate, two senior medical professionals have discovered that a vitamin D deficiency may be a factor in some unexplained infant deaths.

Dr. Marta Cohen and Dr. Irene Scheimberg studied the cases of children who had died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Their initial findings indicate a need for more children to take a good natural diet supplement to combat any problems in vitamin deficiency.

The research was a result of a court case in 2009 when Rohan Wray and Chana Al-Alas were accused of shaking a four-month-old baby to death. Both defendants were acquitted following evidence from Dr. Scheimberg that the fractures sustained by the baby could easily be the result of severe rickets.

The subsequent study found thirty cases of vitamin D deficiency in London and a further 45 in Yorkshire. A significant number of childhood deaths examined (around three quarters) were deficient in vitamin D. The resultant weakness of the bones could easily lead to brittle bones and severe fractures. Equally, a vitamin D deficiency can cause hypocalcemic fits, which are a result of low blood calcium levels.

The belief amongst senior medical staff is now that many people in the United Kingdom are deficient in vitamin D and need to take a good natural diet supplement to compensate.
