What are the risks? Well, the definitive body regarding cancer in Britain is Cancer Research UK and they reveal that in 2010 12,818 British people were diagnosed with malignant melanoma skin cancer. In the same year there were 2,746 deaths from the condition. On a more positive note, around 100,000 people were discovered to have a non-malignant skin cancer but there are too many dying.

In the USA, the picture is even more dramatic. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the country and affects more than 2 million people each year (Skincancer.org) with one person dying of the condition every hour.

Now the celebrity world has found a champion for taking care of our skin and protecting it from the sun. Hillary Fogelson is married to Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson and has survived three skin cancer scares. She has just written a book on her experiences and runs the Pale Speaks Foundation and Melanoma Research Foundation.

Fogelson also talks about her campaign to raise awareness of the issue on her Pale Girl Speaks website. She says, “I want people to understand the danger of UV exposure – indoors and out.”

Okay, so Hillary Fogelson does not necessarily advocate sunless tan lotions as we do, but there is no doubt that ensuring the best protection when your skin is exposed to ultra-violet rays has to be a priority.

However, there is a move to encourage more activity as a result of the Olympic Games. Several sports are reporting an increase in interest from the general public; Judo Silver medallist, Gemma Gibbons, has reported a surge in interest in the sport following her win and the British Volleyball website has seen an 850% increase in hits. But most of the successful athletes have already started to encourage others to follow them into sport and their victory parades in various local towns since the Games can only help further.

And we have not even started the Paralympic Games yet…
