Alcohol And The Skin

Girl Drinking A Glass Of White Wine Outside A Cafe

A moderate amount of alcohol is considered by many to be good for the functions of the body but can too much be a threat to healthy skin?

Studies have shown the consumption of alcohol can encourage good cholesterol and so reduce the chances of strokes and heart disease but another effect of alcohol is the dilation of the blood vessels in the skin.

No doubt you will have heard of the story that St Bernard dogs are used to rescue lost climbers in the European Alps. These animals are supposed to carry brandy to revive the victims. This of course is rubbish as the dilation caused by the alcohol actually promotes heat loss and actually causes hypothermia. Think of that when you drink whisky to stay warm.

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol lead to telangiecyasias, a permanent chronic dilation of previously healthy skin. This is why alcoholics generally have a red face.

Alcohol also worsens acne and the redness of the skin called rosacea. The face in particular will suffer from flushing, redness, white spots and pimply bumps.

The excessive consumption of alcohol also causes formerly healthy skin to become more wrinkled and to have more lines. This is because alcohol actually dehydrates the body (another myth destroyed), as does caffeine so those drinks too are to be avoided in excess.

Both caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, which cause us to urinate more often (a common problem on a Saturday night) and this of course further reduces the water in the body.

Interestingly, alcohol is actually a toxin, which is why the liver is damaged in alcoholics. The liver is the organ responsible for dealing with toxins and poisons. Vitamin A, an important anti-oxidant is also depleted by attacks from alcohol.

A study in 1998 found that Americans drink an average of five alcoholic or caffeinated drinks a day. This sort of consumption would easily cancel out the intake of water.

If you are a smoker or perhaps combine sugary or caffeine-rich drinks with alcohol, then the chances of a healthy skin are greatly reduced.

Of course damage to previously healthy skin is not the only problem with excessive alcohol intake. The substance also depletes calcium intake (leading potentially to osteoporosis or brittle bones) and increases the build-up of fat cells (particularly in women) but those are subjects for later articles.

It would be wrong (and unrealistic) to stop the consumption of alcohol altogether, particularly as some consumption may be beneficial, so the obvious recommendation to avoid excessive intake. As with all things, moderation is important in maintaining a healthy skin.

Dealing With Dry Skin

Bikini Girl in the Desert

Extremes of skin types are equally problematic. Those with oily skin wish their skin was drier and those with dry skin wish it had more oils. The truth is we all want healthy skin.

So how do you turn dry skin into healthy skin?

The first thing to realize is healthy skin comes from inside. To deal with dry skin the first step is to ensure you hydrate sufficiently.

Make sure you drink plenty of water or fruit juice. The problem in using liquids to hydrate and create healthy skin is the water arrives at the skin last.

As the moisture is drawn from the liquids you drink, it hydrates all the other organs before it reaches the skin. This is good in many ways as it ensures the essential organs receive healthy hydration on the way. The order of priority tends to be the heart and brain first, then the main muscle groups and then major systems such as the digestive and respiratory functions. The skin then receives its share. Once you have nicely hydrated healthy skin you know the rest of your body has also benefitted.

Get in the habit of carrying and drinking water or juice.

Oh, and by the way, alcohol is no help as it actually draws moisture from the skin, as does caffeine.

The other way to turn dry skin into healthy skin is to use a good natural beauty product to moisturize.

Use a good natural skincare product in the morning and at night. The nighttime application is especially important as it is less likely to be rubbed off and of course it is when we are at rest that the skin is renewed and regenerated.

The morning application is also useful as it not only moisturizes the skin but provides a protective layer against such enemies of healthy skin such as pollutants.

A thin layer of a moisturizing natural skincare product will be sufficient.

Don’t forget that natural skincare products are better for dry skin as they will not irritate the skin as some chemical versions might.

The Benefits Of Zinc Oxide To Natural Skincare

Girl with beautiful blonde hair

Zinc oxide has many applications in several fields, including in the production of rubber and concrete and as a food additive. However this adaptable substance, probably used in India around 500BC and by the Romans too, is particularly useful in medicine and as a constituent of mineral cosmetics.

This additive to natural beauty products is a key ingredient of the traditional skin treatment calamine lotion. It is anti-inflammatory and is used in sunscreens as a result of its natural skincare property of adhering to the skin and reducing the amount of potentially dangerous ultra violet rays absorbed.

This feature of non-absorption means zinc oxide is nonirritating and nonallergenic. There is some evidence it may well be an anti-oxidant too.

Some cheaper sunscreens use a nano zinc oxide but this is absorbed by the skin and is less effective and may even cause health problems (although studies are yet to establish this).

This natural skincare ingredient also features in cream designed to prevent nappy (or diaper) rash due to its abilities to combat skin irritations through its adherence to the skins surface. Zinc oxide also has antibacterial properties, which help its abilities in natural skincare.

Acne can also be controlled as a result of zinc oxides anti-inflammatory properties and it ability to also control excessive skin oil. Through its promotion of healthy skin, this substance also helps scars heal more quickly.

As a result of these advantages, this useful substance can also be found in rectal suppositories and in treatments (such as calamine lotion) for chapped, dry or itching skin and minor burns.

Zinc oxide is also used in nutritional supplements as a source of zinc, which is useful for DNA and immune system maintenance.

With all its benefits to healthy skin, it is clear that zinc oxide is a useful ingredient in natural beauty products, especially natural skin products.

Give Your Body Bliss

Beautiful tanned girl in bikini below waterfall

Proto-col’s Instant Body Bliss product is an indulgent natural skincare product: a luxurious scrub which buffs up the skin to leave it feeling glowing smooth and fabulous.

It is one of those delightful natural beauty products, which is luxurious and yet affordable and leaves a beautifully healthy skin.

The feel of this natural skincare product is decidedly tropical with pampering essential oils such as neroli and sandalwood to deal with any stretch marks and cellulite. Such oils are also reputed to be natural aphrodisiacs so your partner will be appreciative too, especially as the Instant Body Bliss will leave you with a beautiful light and delicate tropical fragrance.

This natural skincare product contains only natural, plant-based ingredients so is ideal for sensitive skin. It can be used as often as you like but once or twice a week should be sufficient. However, as it is one of those natural beauty products, which will be considered a treat, you may want to use it more often!

As with all Proto-col products, Instant Body Bliss is not tested on animals.

The product is ideal for massaging treatments, a body exfoliating treatment the day before spray tanning, to work on any tide marks left from tanning or to improve the skin after holiday sunbathing.

Studies have shown that the regular massaging of this natural skincare product into areas where fatty tissues are stored helps break down the fat and so helps reduce lymphathic damage. Such regular massage will thus reduce cellulite.

The product is contained in an attractive jar and first appears with intriguing levels of various pinks, which are the oils and salts separated. The first action therefore is to get a small spoon and mix these together.

The natural skincare product should then be massaged gently into the body for a least a minute. Work particularly on areas where fat may be a problem, such as the thighs and tummy.

Once you have experienced enough bliss, rinse your body slowly in warm water and pat dry. Then enjoy the smoothness of your skin!

So what are the ingredients of Instant Body Bliss?

There are many effective natural products in this natural skincare product.

Grape Seed oil is used as it is an astringent and is rich in vitamins, as is lemongrass, which is a great skin tonic working on oily skin, open pores and acne.

Melon is a wonderful skin conditioner so it is included, as is apricot for it’s humectant qualities and the fact it is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals.

As you massage this natural skincare product into your increasingly healthy skin you will feel the Dead Sea Salts as they heal and sooth the skin.

The Proto-col Instant Body Bliss is one of those natural beauty products that is a treat you really should allow yourself once in a while. During the Christmas period this natural skincare product is even more affordable with £2 off the normal price, reducing it from the usual £19.95 to £17.95. Smoking And Your Skin

Girl smoking cigarette

The effects of aging and excess sun on the skin on otherwise healthy skin are well known but there is one pollutant that can have a detrimental effect too. Smoking.

Healthy skin comes from the inside through nutritional health but in the case of smoking damage comes from inside and outside too.

Of course there has been a lot of negative propaganda about smoking in recent years so it would be too easy to see this article as another annoying campaign to stop smoking. Nonetheless, I will try to set out how smoking affects the skin as a reasoned argument for healthy skin.

The primary role of the blood is to transport oxygen to the vital organs in the body including healthy skin. One of the byproducts of tobacco smoke is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is absorbed two hundred times more quickly than oxygen and displaces the oxygen in the bloodstream thus starving the vital organs. In excess carbon monoxide kills.

Carbon monoxide also creates extra free radicals in the body, which attack various areas, particularly the skin.

One of the roles of the liver in the body is to neutralize harmful chemicals. If it has to deal with too many it will have to switch from its usual functions to deal with the threat. Just to summarize the livers important functions, it helps process digested food and turns it into energy, controls the level of fats, glucose and amino acids, combats various infections in the body, cleans the body of infections, stores essential chemicals and vitamins, manufactures proteins and enzymes essential to the bodily functions, manufactures bile and of course neutralizes drugs and toxins. Pretty useful then.

Cigarette smoke contains several harmful chemicals including hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, cadmium and prussic acid. Overworking the liver in combatting these threats leads to healthy skin turning yellow: a condition that can get worse the more cigarettes smoked.

Smoking also damages the nutritional health of the skin by restricting the formation of vitamin C. This vitamin is itself an anti-oxidant so is unable to attack the extra free radicals produced by the act of smoking.

Vitamin C also helps in the production of collagen, which helps plump the skin. Reduced vitamin C begins the change from healthy skin to the dry, wrinkly and saggy skin seen in experienced smokers.

We all know smoking produces nicotine, another of the harmful chemicals, and this acts like an adrenaline, restricting the blood vessels to the skin. This further restricts the flow of nutrients and oxygen. Another consequence is wounds are slow to heal.

But it is not just the chemical effects that damage healthy skin. Think about the physical reactions to smoking. Firstly, smokers purse their lips to draw the smoke and this repeated action promotes extreme wrinkles around the mouth. Equally, the eyes are more frequently squeezed shut, both in the action of smoking and in avoiding smoke getting into the eyes. Again, this repeated action creates wrinkles around the eyes.

All of us probably know someone who has spent too long in the sun on a regular basis and is showing premature aging of his or her skin. If you look at a heavy smoker you will see similar effects, except the skin will also look sallow.

Clearly smoking tobacco has a detrimental effect on otherwise healthy skin. Natural supplements and natural beauty products can reverse the signs to an extent but the better option is to not smoke at all.

Fats Can Be Good For You

In recent times we seem to have come to the conclusion that all fats are bad for us. This is not the case at all.

There are certain fats that can actually improve our day-to-day performance and health. They can even help provide a healthy skin!

These are the essential fatty acids (EFAs) and the most beneficial are omega 3 and omega 6. These fat molecules cannot be made by the human body and are essential to our nutritional health and the correct functioning of the body. These have to come from the foods we eat.

Avoiding fat in our diet prevents us getting the fitness fats we require and a low-fat diet makes us very ill. Indeed, a no-fat diet could actually be fatal in the long-term.

These fats help the kidneys function and remove the excess water, which can constitute the surplus weight carried by some people. Omegas 3 and 6 also improve the detoxification process of both the kidneys and the liver.

Ensuring our nutritional health with fitness fats can actually keep you slim. These fats are anabolic and metabolise oxygen, increasing energy levels and stamina. As a result, muscles grow faster. Oddly, they help us burn calories faster and help the blood flow faster through the capillaries so improving the oxygen distribution through the body.

Protein is kept in check by fitness fats. Yes, protein can actually become toxic and create muscle breakdown unless balanced by the correct fats. They also help the production of testosterone and insulin.

Interestingly the fitness fats also promote calmness and concentration. Those with the right levels also sleep better.

Fitness fats have several other advantages, such as a better digestion and a better immune system. They also protect us from environmental toxins such as pesticides and are anti-inflammatory and anti-depressive.

The earlier point about healthy skin is relevent. Enough of the right fats promote a smooth, healthy skin. A lack of fitness fats results in dry skin. This is particularly a problem as the skin is the last organ to receive fats from the digestion.

Our nutritional health has been suffering recently from a phobia of all fats – good and bad. A healthy diet involves balance and should avoid the bad fats but importantly include the good fats. This is key to our nutritional health.

If you would like to know more about fitness fats, Dr Udo Erasmus has written a book, ‘Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill,’ on the subject.

Vitamin C In Anti Aging Products

Many natural beauty products include vitamin C in their ingredients. What are the advantages of this particular vitamin to healthy skin, especially in those claiming anti- aging properties?

Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, enables the production of collagen and, as we know, collagen is essential to healthy skin. A loss of vitamin C results in a loss of elasticity in the skin and wrinkling – similar to that seen in people who have spent too long in the sun. In addition, a lack of vitamin C results in wounds and indeed the gums not healing correctly.

A well-known symptom of an extreme lack of vitamin C is the condition known as scurvy. This was the curse of seafarers years ago and symptoms include bleeding gums and open wounds.

Vitamin C is also a good antioxidant and ensures healthy skin through the scavenging of free radicals. Vitamin C also has benefits to the health of blood vessels and the immune system.

One problem is vitamin C oxidizes easily on contact with the air so good natural beauty products have to carefully formulated to prevent this. You will know if oxidization has occurred as a light brown residue will form around the neck of the container. Oxidized vitamin C loses much of its antioxidant properties.

One way to overcome the problem is to use not vitamin C but a derivative of it but this is less effective on the skin. Pure vitamin C products are therefore usually expensive. This clearly gives manufacturers of natural beauty products a problem but there are quite a few that have solved the problem without making the natural skincare product too dear.

Of course, a good diet with plenty of vitamin C in it (using perhaps citrus fruit) will help, or if required, good natural supplements. Good nutrition always shows in the complexion.

Be sure to take care in your selection of natural beauty products.

Look After Your Neck And Hands

You may have noticed as I have but aging is given away by the condition of the neck and hands. This is why many older celebrities take to wearing scarves and other neck ornaments. Others might even wear gloves more.

Too much sun can also show aging on the chest: I have known several older ladies in particular from hotter countries whose chests show their age very early.

The skin on these surfaces tends to be thinner with less sweat and oil glands to keep the area moisturised. The skin on the neck, hands and chest needs to be treated in a different way to other areas, such as the face, so some healthy skin tips might be appropriate.

The truth is these areas of the skin show the state of your collagen health. It is the deterioration of the collagen in the skin that helps create this aged, wrinkled look.

There are several ways to combat this.

You can improve your collagen health in various ways including collagen injections and collagen capsules.

There are surgical and other drastic procedures you can undertake but good natural skin treatment products should be effective in keeping the symptoms at bay. Often good nutrition, including natural dietary supplements, should help too.

There is a deeper layer of dead skin cells on the neck, hands and chest and this is why natural skincare products are usually thicker in consistency.

The use of a good quality sunscreen can also delay the signs of aging.

Too often these areas of skin are neglected in the regular use of natural skin treatment but as the neck, hands and chest can be such a giveaway to age, they should clearly be given at least equal attention.

Proto-col provide a high quality, good value range of collagen capsules, natural dietary supplements and natural skin treatment products that are designed to reduce the signs of aging. Find out more at LookRavishing.com

To match all shades of skin, this foundation comes in four colours: ranging from the lightest ‘ivory’ to ‘iroko.’

How To Apply Proto-col Foundation

Having poured a small amount of the foundation into the lid, use a Kabuki brush (there is an excellent one in the Proto-col range), and swirl it around the lid to work the mineral makeup powder into the bristles.

Apply the powder to the skin in a circular, buffing action until the desired coverage has been achieved. Make sure you blend it the area under the line of the jaw.

It is always better to apply the mineral powder makeup in thin layers, using smaller amounts of powder than apply too much in one go.

About Proto-col Skin Cleanser And Toner

The skin cleanser and toner from Proto-col together offer a gentle and effective natural skin treatment.

The cleanser uses a variety of natural ingredients to hydrate, soften and condition the skin and the skin toner has gentle astringent qualities without the use of alcohol. Neither is tested on animals and indeed contains only plant-based products and no animal products.

Both are suitable for sensitive and dry skins. The lack of alcohol means each natural skin treatment can be used on broken skin too.

The Proto-col skin cleanser is a natural skin treatment containing plant derived collagen to nourish the skin and camomile, which in itself is a good cleanser and it also soothes the skin whilst improving elasticity.

Other ingredients include orange oil for decongesting and detoxifying, neroli oil (from the blossom of the bitter orange tree) for skin regeneration, palm oil for lubricating and hydrating, aloe vera for soothing and healing and guava and kiwi to strengthen the skin and promote its general health.

Interestingly, the natural skin treatment ingredient neroli oil is well known for helping combat skin conditions such as thread veins, stretch marks and scarring. Equally aloe vera is renowned for helping heal burns and other conditions such as dermatitis and dry, chapped skin.

The other natural skin treatment, the Proto-col toner is just as useful, containing not only plant derived collagen, aloe vera and guava and kiwi but also witch hazel, a mild astringent that still soothes the skin. Also included are panthenol containing vitamin B5, which has anti-inflammatory properties and can sooth and heal as well, and, intriguingly, coral seaweed. The coral seaweed is rich in amino acids and contains magnesium and calcium to soften and oxygenate the skin.

How To Apply

Application is easy. A small amount of the cleanser is spread with a gentle circular movement across the whole of the face and neck using the fingers. It can then be removed either with a damp cotton wool pad or by gently splashing the face with water.

You will find this will effectively remove all the residue makeup (including lip stick and eye makeup) as well as traces of pollution and grime.

After cleansing, apply the toner with another damp cotton wool pad, brushing gently in an upward and outward direction. As an alternative, you could also give your face a light spray directly.

Proto-col skin cleanser and toner are together a natural skin treatment which are very effective in giving you healthy, supple skin but also give you the knowledge you are using the very best natural and ethical products.

From 1 October until Christmas, you can try both these natural skin treatment products as part of promotional packs at offer prices. Visit LookRavishing.com to find out more.
