Using Nutrition and Your Health To Deal With Ageing

Most of us accept that we become less capable as we grow older: however this need not necessarily need to be the case. There are ways to have a healthy lifestyle that could slow down the rate at which we age.

Obviously age is a number but it depends on how we treat our bodies as to whether or not that number converts into reduced physical abilities.

I suppose it seems obvious when we see the advertising telling us of the dangers of smoking and excess drinking that such bad habits can shorten our lives. Not many of us realise however that regular exercise, good nutrition and the right amount of rest can lengthen our lives or, at least, our active lives.

The great explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be 70 years old next year. His daily routine involves running for two hours near his farm on Exmoor. He has completed a number of marathons, including some in extreme conditions, and a few of years ago a medical check-up found he has the fitness of most 25-year-olds.

Obviously we do not need to go to the lengths of someone like Ranulph Fiennes to stave off the effects of ageing but there seems little doubt that a healthy lifestyle can help.

Tips For Fake Tanning: Keep Your Tan Longer

Beautiful Young Woman In Grey Top Looking At Camera

Winter is almost gone and spring is on its way (we hope). Now is the time we start to expose a bit more skin and we want that skin to look at its best. One way of doing so is to use sunless tan lotions to give us that healthy glow.

Many of us know long exposure to the sun is not good for our skin and so sunless tan lotions are the way forward.

We do want to look our best, so there are some tips for fake tanning that will help keep that healthy glow for longer.

A useful article on the BeautySouthAfrica.com website has some tips to help.

As with most beauty enhancements, preparation is key. Make sure you exfoliate to remove those dead skin cells and moisturise properly. This will prepare the skin to accept the tanning lotion when you apply it.

A tan will last that much longer if you look after your skin. It is worth moisturising as much, if not more, than before and you will have healthy skin as well as looking great. Using a body oil before you get into the shower will also preserve the tan for longer.

You can always enhance the tan on your face by subtle use of blushers and bronzers – but be careful, as always, of overdoing it and having a face considerably darker than your shoulders.

Obviously there will come a time when you will have to reapply your sunless tan lotions so, when you do, be careful to create a gentle tone or you will risk changing from light to dark overnight. Some people might like this but in most cases, as with other cosmetic applications, it is always best to make things look as natural as possible.

Let’s look forward to a beautiful and healthy summer!

More People Are Experiencing Collagen Benefits

Attractive Young Lady In Mad Action Pose

A recent report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. has shown that more and more people are set to discover the benefits of collagen as a way to improve their health. The growing number of older people and increased demand from developing nations mean that this useful protein will be in greater demand across the globe.

Collagen of course accounts for around one third of the total protein found in the body and is especially significant for the skin, bone and connective tissues in the joints. This is why extra collagen benefits older people as we start to lose more of the substance the older we grow.

In the example of our bones, we reach our peak bone mass between the ages of 20 and 30, after which it deteriorates at a rate of between one and two percent each year. This accelerates during menopause and leads to the distressing condition of osteoporosis or ‘brittle bones.’

Equally, a reduction of collagen in the connective tissues in our bones leads to the cartilage that protects the end of the bones wearing away. This means the bones rub together and wear, creating the painful condition we know as osteoarthritis. Athletes discover the benefits of collagen in keeping their joints operating at an optimum level.

Collagen benefits the skin too. It makes up around 75% of the skins mass and is affected by a number of conditions. Once again, menopause can accelerate the loss of collagen in the skin as we age and it is this that causes the loss of elasticity in the skin and leads to wrinkles and sagging.

The benefits of collagen can also be seen in the condition of other skin-related areas. The time taken for wounds to heal increases as our collagen decreases with age and both nails and hair lose their vitality.

But it is not only ageing that affects the level of collagen in the skin. An excess of exposure to Ultra Violet rays (such as in the sun) leads to premature ageing or ‘photoaging,’ with the increase of wrinkles, dryness, thinning, sagging and bruising in the skin.

A study published in the International Journal of Dermatology in 2002 reported that wrinkling had been recorded in the facial skin of cigarette smokers as young as 20 years old. Research shows that smoking damages the level of collagen in our skin too. A person who smokes ten cigarettes a day for ten years is more likely to lose their skin health than someone who does not smoke at all.

Professor Greg Whyte, senior physiologist at Liverpool University, advises the British Olympic Team and is frequently called upon to advise celebrities undertaking difficult challenges on television. He has no doubt about the benefits of collagen: “We need it for healthy joints, physical resilience and the ability to recover from injuries.” He tells us that we lose 1.5% of our collagen each year after the age of twenty-five. This means we have lost thirty percent by the age of forty and the benefits of collagen are also lost to us.

It is hardly surprising therefore that the GIA report shows that more and more of us are seeking products that restore the benefits of collagen as we get older.

The report shows an increase in competition in the collagen market too, driven by increased innovation in how we reintroduce the substance and thus the collagen benefits into our bodies.

This means there is more choice for consumers of collagen and therefore more confusion as to the best products to use.

One of the most effective ways to restore the benefits of collagen is to simply take the collagen hydrolysate tablets used by members of the British Olympic Team and produced by Proto-col. Find out more about these tablets at LookRavishing.com.

Ways To Have A Healthy Lifestyle: Exercise In The New Year

Young Woman Doing Yoga Pose In The Open Air

One of the key ways to have a healthy lifestyle this New Year is to ensure you have regular moderate exercise. Once again this is best achieved as part of your daily routine. The benefits are widely understood to improve all areas of our health, including the operation of our heart and other vital organs, our moods, sleep, energy and even sex life.

But what exercise represents one of the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle? Perhaps one of the best ways is to find a set of exercises to start your day. The BoxingScene.com website tells us that getting into the habit of loosening up before breakfast helps us regulate our appetite throughout the day, jump starts your metabolism and gives you energy from the beginning. A routine based on Tai Chi or Yoga would be ideal but you could also consult a qualified physiotherapist to have some recommended exercises. It need only take fifteen to thirty minutes from your morning before breakfast but the benefits could be significant. It is always a good idea to exercise as early as possible since the longer you leave it the more chance there is that you will get distracted and not exercise at all.

Loosening up early on is always useful but another of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is to create the opportunity for a longer period of aerobic exercise to get the heart and lungs working. This can be any sport that motivates you and encourages you to continue exercising regularly (and there are many from which to choose) but the best activities involve walking, running, swimming or cycling. Running is excellent of course but can result in long-term joint damage and swimming is also ideal although, like running, is not that convenient (unless you have your own pool). This leaves cycling and walking, which are great exercise but importantly can be easily built into the day’s routine.

If you are like me you might struggle to find the time to exercise every day. Walking and cycling however can fit easily into the day. If you have an appointment a mile or two away, leave the car and walk or cycle instead. Make it a rule never to use the car for short journeys. Doing the same for the trip to work if you can will get you fit very quickly and must be one of the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle. But why stop there? If you visit the shops by car, park at the far end of the car park (where most empty spaces are) and walk a little further. Most of us park as close to the door as we can but parking further out will help your health no end.

Another great way to ensure you use one of the ways to have a healthy lifestyle is to own a dog. Apart from the benefits arising from the affection most dogs will show, you will be encouraged to take your animal for a walk every day. This gives you exercise and fresh air, which can only be good.

In a later article we will talk about hobbies and interests and the how they too are among the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle. One of the benefits is the exercise they provide.

The Chicago Tribune website did a study of gardening as exercise in 2011. They discovered that gardening can burn around 300 calories an hour and can be good both for the heart and the muscles. Like all exercise, however, it needs to undertaken with care and, if you intend to undertake a rigorous exercise regime, it would be wise to consult a medical professional first.

Two more of the benefits of choosing an outdoors sport or activity as one of the ways to have a healthy lifestyle are sunshine and fresh air. Stay indoors and you are breathing stale air but go outside and the fresh air will encourage you to breathe deeply, so expanding the lungs. Maybe stay away from congested traffic or other pollution however!

Sunshine also provides a feeling of well being and also copious amounts of useful vitamin D. This vitamin benefits the heart and circulation and studies have shown it can reduce the loss of bone density often related to old age. Be careful not to overdo the sunshine however as burning and skin cancer are definitely not good for the health.

Being outdoors also has beneficial psychological effects. Sunshine in particular has been shown to reduce depression through the production of the body’s natural endorphin anti-depressants. Even a good brisk walk in the cold, sun or rain can provide a surprisingly positive outlook on life. In my experience getting out in all weathers (wearing the correct clothing) reduces the depressive effects of dull days.

There seems to be no doubt that taking exercise whenever we can is one of the best ways to have a healthy lifestyle. The satisfaction you get from moderate exercise and the optimum weight you will achieve will change your outlook considerably – and, done sensibly, you will have less illness.

Health And Nutrition Articles: Male Skincare Big In Asia

Young Bearded Man In White Shirt Looking Into The Camera

Just as women all around the world are looking a ways to lead a healthy lifestyle – including using better, more healthy mineral powder makeup – men are now starting to catch up.

Of course we men have been interested in being more healthy in terms of nutrition, particularly if we want to excel at sports, but now there is a trend towards men taking care of their skin.

The consumer research group Euromonitor International has published a report on men’s grooming and it seems Asian men are leading the world in purchasing skincare products.

Ladies have always looked after their skin but now men are slowly starting to follow them. The trend is slower in Europe where the financial constraints are restricting sales (skincare is still seen as a luxury) but in other areas the market is buoyant.

Asian men are much keener on skincare than Brazil, for example, where the emphasis in on deodorants. South America is another area where men’s grooming products are on the increase.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 10: Get Enough Sleep

Young Woman Asleep In Bed At Sunrise

It looks like finding one of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is easier than you might expect. One of the most important beauty tips you can come across is simply to get more sleep.

Yup, your skin will thank you for getting enough shut-eye each night. We all know days after late nights when we look in the mirror and are faced with puffy and saggy eyes. The body uses sleep time to regenerate – and that includes the skin.

I was at a major hospital recently as the sun set and was amazed to see lots of maintenance workers coming out and repairing all those jobs that were reported to them during the day. Your skin is the same: as you sleep, the body’s priorities turn to growth and repairs. If you have drunk enough water, the skin will be moisturised from within. The damage caused during the day by pollution will be repaired.

Studies have compared photographs of people who have had enough sleep and those that hadn’t and every time the pictures of the good sleepers were seen as more attractive.

Of course, sleep won’t solve everything but a nice night of Z’s will give you a major start the next day. And you will feel good too.

What’s not to like? Sleep has to be one of the best healthy skin tips.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 7: Applying Lip Gloss

Beautiful Lady In Pink With Lovely Lips And Eyes

The lips can be the focus of any look and applying lip-gloss can be the crowning feature of a regime using healthy makeup for skin.

As with the rest of the face, the lips should be looked after to make them glow naturally so one of the important healthy skin tips is to choose the products you use carefully and apply them carefully.

Lip-gloss can be used in a variety of ways. A clear gloss can be used to emphasise the natural colour of the lips or can be used to create a great lip colour. Lip-glosses can be bought in a range of colours and, if you have the time, layering applications can result in an amazing gloss effect. As with all makeup, experimentation can be very rewarding.

If you are using mineral powder makeup you could even try applying the powder to your lips before sealing it in with a lip-gloss. Try to see what colour work for you and have fun with it.

Matt lips work best in the day but the gloss really comes into its own in the evening. If your lips are dry you might even consider using a lip balm or moisturiser before applying a gloss. Make the lips the last job after working on the rest of the face.

You could use a lip liner first to define the lips. Then apply the gloss from the middle outwards. Don’t quite reach the corners of the mouth as the liner will work its way out there anyway and you don’t want a build-up in the corners.

Once applied, press your lips firmly together to ensure an even spread and you are ready to go.

Use mineral powder makeup to get the look you want and keep your skin healthy.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 7: Consider Sunless Tan Lotions

Stunning Brunette Wearing Green Necklace

Here in the UK we are officially in the summer months and there are of course ways to have a healthy lifestyle this time of year – particularly where caring for your skin is concerned.

The biggest challenge has to be the effects of ultra-violet rays on the skin. It is unlikely that we can avoid the sun at all times so the use of sunscreen should be considered if outside. Sunblock might even be an idea for those with a light complexion. Note that sunscreens filter the suns rays and sunblock keeps them out.

It is wise not to stay too long in the sun however as the levels of skin cancer in the western world are on the increase. If a mole appears on your skin or an existing one grows in size it is well-worth having it checked by your doctor. The operation to remove moles is relatively simple and quick – far easier than having treatment for cancer.

If you are outside for any length of time, one of the more useful healthy skin tips is to moisturise regularly and, if you are starting to redden, have some after sun available. Your skin can even burn on a cloudy day – especially if it is windy as wind burn is quite a common problem. A warm atmosphere and a drying wind can affect the skin too.

If you want to have a ‘healthy’ tan, you will be better considering a sunless tan lotion rather than prolonged periods in the sun or on a sunbed.

My Personal Healthy Skin Tips

My mother always laughed when I talked to her about the latest beauty product I had found and asked her for tips to beautiful skin. She had always washed with soap and water and had never used any face creams. Right into her eighties, she still had good skin – though obviously she hadn’t worried about trying to stop the wrinkles!
I am not so lucky and my skin gets dry easily. It is also quite sensitive – I learnt the hard way not to use strong soap if I didn’t want a puffy face! I don’t have a complicated skin routine. However, I am in my 50s and have managed to delay too many of the dreaded wrinkles so I assume I am doing something right. My healthy skin tips are simple and nothing we haven’t all heard before. These tips are:

  • Eat well – follow advice about healthy eating and drinking;
  • Protect your skin from the sun all the time, not just when you are sunbathing;
  • If you want a tan, read about tips for fake tanning and use of sunless tan lotions on this website;
  • Cleanse thoroughly with a gentle cleanser – even if you are really tired before you go to bed;
  • Find a moisturiser that suits you and use it;
  • Use a dedicated moisturiser around the eye area and be careful when applying – ‘be gentle’ is the order of the day.

There are no magic solutions and we are all different. However, we do all owe it to ourselves to look after our skin so, if you haven’t done so already, develop a routine that suits you and stick to it.
H.G.
