Health And Nutrition Articles: Nutrition For Your Eyes

Beautiful Lady With Brown Eyes Looking Into The Camera

Ensuring the correct nutrition is one of the key ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. The body’s processes rely on the consumption of vitamins and minerals to function.

Each part of the body benefits from a slightly different concoction of substances to ensure optimum performance.

The eyes, for example, require certain vitamins and minerals. Research has shown that increasing the level of these nutrients can help prevent or even reverse certain eye conditions.

Folk lore has always told us how carrots are good for seeing in the dark and in reality eating carrots could indeed be one of the ways to have a healthy lifestyle – certainly as far as the eyes are concerned.

Carrots, spinach, kale and butternut squash all contain beta-carotine, which, when combined with vitamins C and E can reduce the level of macular degeneration in the eyes.

This is also true of Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel and herring) and in walnuts. Omega-3 can also prevent dry eyes.

Green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, and eggs provide Lutein and Zeaxanthin and this also reduces the risk of chronic eye diseases. Cataracts and the effects of age can be held at bay using these two substances.

Vitamins C and E have already been mentioned and these two act as powerful antioxidants, protecting the cells of the eyes from free radicals, which can break down the healthy tissue in the eyes.

It is wise therefore to ensure you maintain your nutrition in order to prevent problems with your eyes.

You should of course use a healthy, balanced diet as one of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle but taking a good quality health supplement could back this up. Go to LookRavishing.com to discover new March offers on nutritional supplements.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 4: Natural Diet Supplement And Maintaining Calcium Levels

Pretty Ballerina Dancing On Decking

You probably know it is worth keeping up your levels of calcium in the body, either through a healthy diet or a good natural diet supplement, and that calcium is important for bones and teeth but did you know your muscles depend on calcium too?

It’s true. Muscles cramp without enough of this useful substance and even the nerves controlling muscles need calcium to operate properly. One of the signs of a lack of calcium is muscle twitch (called tetany) and in extreme cases the heart muscles can fail.

If you do not have enough calcium the muscles will rob the bones to get their supply and exacerbate the problem of brittle bones, leading to an increased chance of osteoporosis.

Make sure that you have enough calcium in your diet or you take a calcium natural diet supplement now to ensure your body’s strength and function later.

Calcium is more important to the body than you realise.

To ensure your calcium health with an excellent natural diet supplement, visit LookRavishing.com.

New Calcium Natural Diet Supplement

Fabulous Arched Backflip by Londons Festival Pier

Last year the Duchess of Cornwall had a fall and broke both her legs. Both her mother and grandmother suffered from osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease, and the Duchess is the President of the National Osteoporosis Society: the fear was that she too was suffering from the condition.

According to statistics from the International Osteoporosis Foundation, an estimated 75 million people in the USA, Europe and Japan suffer from brittle bones and there were around 9 million new osteoporotic fractures during the year 2000. The cost of treating sufferers is estimated at $5.2 billion each year. In women over 45 years of age, osteoporosis accounts for more days in hospital than many other diseases, including breast cancer and diabetes.

The problem is going to get worse too. 1 in 3 women over the age of 65 are prone to fractures, as are 1 in 5 men. By the year 2050 the number of people in Europe and America living beyond the age of 80 is set to triple.

So how can we avoid becoming part of these statistics?

Calcium is the substance that hardens the bones. Actually the real strength in the bones comes from a combination of collagen and calcium. Minerals such as calcium bind to the collagen to form bone.

But it is not just the bones that benefit from calcium. The substance is abundant in the body and maintains the strength of nails and teeth too.

It was the case that we would simply drink lots of milk to build up the calcium levels in our bodies and this has been largely successful in the past. However it is becoming widely accepted that over farming has lead to a reduction in the goodness we receive from various foodstuffs and this is beginning to be understood in the case of the calcium benefits of milk too.

Unfortunately too many cows are being fed on artificial feedstuffs and even those grazing on open meadows may be eating grass reduced in nutrition.

So what do we do then?

While calcium is still found in milk, we need to use nutritional health supplements to increase the calcium we take in. During the Proto-col National Conference earlier this year Managing Director of Proto-col, James Greenwell, launched a new Calcium Complex capsule.

This new product contains both calcium and collagen to help to strengthen bones. However there are other trace substances and vitamins included to ensure bone health and indeed the absorption of calcium to where it is needed.

The figures on osteoporosis are sobering but I think we all owe it to ourselves to give our bodies’ structure the strength it requires for good health and safe living.

The emergence of any new and effective natural diet supplement should be welcomed.

The Wartime Diet And Nutritional Health Supplements

Vegetable Display Including Carrots

The wartime generation from the nineteen forties in Britain are generally considered to be perhaps the most healthy generation of all. Why is that? Could their experiences help us understand why there is so much obesity in the western world today and why so many of us need to take nutritional health supplements.

For around fourteen years the supply of food was severely restricted mostly due to the attempted blockade of supplies by the German navy. It has to be remembered that around 70% of the country’s food was imported before the war.

So started a culture of minimal waste, innovative recipes and the famous ‘Dig For Victory’ campaign that created vegetable plots from most available areas of land. Equally of course everyone was motivated to be more active in his or her life and, in any case, life was more physical as the world of labour saving devices had not yet arrived.

Sugar was radically restricted too so unnecessary consumption of that potentially unhealthy substance was reduced.

The reality was everyone had to think carefully about what they ate. Perhaps we should do the same now.

Modern thinking tells us to eat a minimum amount of fruit and vegetables to gain the nutrition we require. In Britain at present the figure is said to be five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Supermarkets have indeed latched on to this for marketing their own fresh produce.

However I have to sound a note of caution here. How do we know the nutritional content of each individual item of fruit or each portion of vegetables?

The truth is we do not know. Of course we read that carrots contain so much goodness and spinach too and all the other lines we eat. But did you know the content varies considerably depending on how or where the items were grown?

In 1940 a cupful of spinach contained around 150 milligrams of iron, now it is believed to be around two milligrams. Some nutritional experts are saying the daily allocation of fruit and vegetables should be increased from five to eight servings, even perhaps as high as twenty.

Grow Your Own Vegetables Wartime Poster

Why are we getting less from our food?

The problem arises from the production, transportation and storage of the food. To grow fresh produce in sufficient amounts, faster and so in a more cost effective manner, producers are growing the appropriate plants in an artificial environment. As the environment can be controlled, factors can be altered; for example, through the use of artificial light, days can be shortened so the plants grow faster and mature in less time. The downside of this is the nutrients have less time to form. No wonder the natural diet supplement industry is booming.

Another problem is the extensive use of fertilizers, which can leach nutrients from the ground, and incorrect rotation of land ensuring the goodness cannot be returned to the soil.

Now we have another clue as to why the wartime generation was more healthy. Remember their fruit and vegetables were often home grown and certainly without the ‘advantages’ of modern production. Also their cattle grazed on grass and not on artificial feedstuffs. The nutritional content of the food was better.

Another aspect of life in the 1940s that differs greatly from today is the concept of so-called ‘fast food’ had hardly taken off. Of course there were fish and chips available but even then the fish was likely to be fairly fresh and nobody could afford to overeat in any case.

Now we have a great variety of foods available and there is little restriction on what we eat. Sweets and chocolates are very common (remember the American troops arriving in Britain during the Second World War could bribe people with otherwise scarce chocolate) and fats food outlets are very common. Processed foods containing a wide range of additives and preservatives are sold in high volumes.

It is not entirely clear exactly what illnesses are caused by the modern diet but it seems likely poor nutrition is the cause of quite a few. So many people need nutrition health supplements.

We should take heed of the lessons provided by the austere wartime diet and the difference in health between then and now. A change to a healthier balanced diet (perhaps with more home grown or at least locally bought produce), more exercise and nutritional health supplements will probably make a huge difference to our health.

Hyaluronic Acid And How It Can Help Us

Stunning Oriental Girl With Lovely Eyes

You may be the same as me and have never heard of hyaluronic acid, which is a pity as it is quite a useful substance in terms of skincare.

This substance is key in moisturizing the skin as it can hold a thousand times its own weight in water. This is significant as it carries the water around the body to where it is needed. It works with elastin and most particularly collagen to provide benefits in many parts of the body, particularly in hydrating the skin and repairing cartilage. It also helps in repairing scar tissue so has benefits to new mothers and sufferers of acne. Other benefits include faster repairing wounds and relief from arthritis (as it helps lubricate joints.)

Collagen molecules provide the structure into which hyaluronic acid locks moisture.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the substances that deteriorate with age; we lose significant amounts from the age of eighteen and, combined with the loss of collagen, leads to lines and wrinkles later in life.

It hardly seems surprising that this substance is affected by ultra violet light when you consider excess sunlight leads to premature aging and wrinkles. This process has been linked to skin cancer too.

The body is unable to produce sufficient hyaluronic acid in later years so one of the more useful healthy skin tips you could receive would be to find a way to reintroduce this acid into the body. Previously the only method was to inject affected areas with doses (and this is presently the only way yet approved by the US Food and Drug Administration) but of course this involves potential problems such as skin bruising and indeed the fear of injections.

In February the Proto-col company in the United Kingdom introduced it’s Skin Plus capsules, which combine collagen and hyaluronic acid in one easy to take dose. Just for good measure, each natural diet supplement capsule includes a range of useful vitamins too. Proto-col believe this new product represents a significant step forward in skincare.

The February 2011 Proto-col National Conference

Product Display At Protocol Business Conference

On Sunday 6 February 2011, the Proto-col health and beauty company held it’s twice a year national conference and everyone from the company and a good representation of the consultants attended. Also there were some fascinating guest speakers.

The even was held at the Stareton Hall on the Royal Showground near Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, in the UK.

Snacks and beverages were available as were a range of product displays, staffed by knowledgeable staff and distributors ready to answer any questions asked. Proto-col staff ran an efficient product purchase system with a discount available for items bought at the event.

The introduction to the day was by National Trainer Dave Butler, followed by a quick welcome from Managing Director James Greenwell.

The first speaker was celebrity makeup expert Tally Bookbinder who did a demonstration of the Proto-col all natural makeup using as a model Louise Helyer. Apart from helping at the event and being a very professional model, Louise is also representing Great Britain in the Modern Pentathlon: just one of the athletes supporting the conference.

Tally shared her opinions of the all natural makeup produced by Proto-col as well as hints and tips on application and the features of the products. Having recently worked on the television show ‘Snog, Marry, Avoid,’ Tally was particularly interesting on the abuse teenagers and young women generally give their skin and how the all natural makeup from Proto-col is a better choice.

James Greenwell Talking At Protocol Business Conference

Next James Greenwell introduced nutrition expert Professor Greg Whyte who produced his usual blend of entertainment and fascinating insights into the world of sports nutrition. Of course Professor Whyte’s information was related to the nutritional health supplements supplied by Proto-col and this and other knowledge from the day will appear in future posts on BeRavishing.com.

Particularly of interest was Professor Whyte’s explanation of the problems experienced by athletes: this was particularly well illustrated by a video of triathletes losing the use of their limbs as a result of poor nutritional preparation. Equally interesting was the understanding that sports nutrition can be relevant in everyday situations, including the struggle some people have simply to get up stairs.

James Greenwell returned to introduce three new products, Skin Plus, Calcium Complex and L-Carnitine, which will also appear on the pages of this website shortly. During his launch of these nutritional health supplements, James provided the audience with further fascinating insights into the working of the human body.

Following a short break, James returned to explain some administrative changes, including improvements to the sales websites (such as LookRavishing.com) and monthly meetings. He also announced Proto-col nutritional health supplements are now available in a Harley Street health centre.

At the event those attending had brought along children’s books in response to an appeal from James to provide them for the children of St Lucia following damage to the island’s schools in a recent hurricane. James explained how the idea had come about and the success of the programme so far (if you would like to find out more about the Proto-col St Lucia appeal, you can visit the company’s Facebook page).

James then introduced motivational speaker Andy T. Hansen. Andy gave an entertaining but hard-hitting talk explaining how the present financial problems within the economy represented a great opportunity for the company and how we could set goals to achieve what we want.

Dave Butler returned to the stage to introduce a group of exciting incentives for consultants during 2011: these range from vouchers to a theatre break and a holiday to Barcelona. Dave then went on to give tips to the audience as the best ways to expand their individual businesses.

Everyone left the event better informed as to the immediate future of the company and a useful goody-bag laden with CDs, DVDs, new product information, details of the new incentives and other useful items. Many of us also left with a bag of products purchased at the event and a new confidence in both the products and the Proto-col company.

The next such conference is on Sunday 25 September, although there are also monthly meetings held around the country. If you would like to attend any of these events, please use the contact form on this page. Further details can be found on the ‘Events’ tab on LookRavishing.com .

Avoid Sugar If You Have Influenza

Pig In Mask Swine Flu

Adding sugar to your diet does not contribute to nutritional health as we can get all the sweetness we need in the food we eat already. However sugar is particularly unwelcome if you have a health problem such as the flu.

This surprised me until I did some research and I found sugar actually depresses the immune system.

What is perhaps better known is vitamin C is good for cold and flu prevention and treatment. This vitamin is needed for the production of phagocytes, which are the white blood corpuscles used in the destruction of harmful bacteria and viruses.

The chemical structure of glucose (the main constituent of sugar of course) is very similar to that of vitamin C. When the two come into contact a struggle ensues and glucose generally wins. The net effect is a reduced amount of vitamin C and the immune system slows right down.

The influenza virus is thus left to run riot.

But it is not just flu that benefits from the intake of sugar. Most people are aware of sugar causing diabetes but this attack on the immune system means other conditions are aggravated, such as asthma, gallstones, heart disease, hypertension, personality disorders, nervous disorders, mood swings, mental illness and even arthritis.

Sugar is lacking vitamins and minerals of course and must find them to metabolize into the body. In doing so it draws such goodness away from other parts of the body. This prevents the breakdown of cholesterol and fatty acids, which are then stored around organs and in the sub-cutaneous tissues creating obesity. This in itself promotes other illnesses.

There is some debate as to which nutritional supplements should be used for the treatment of influenza but certainly the consumption of sugar is to be avoided.

The Proto-col range of natural supplements includes products to help promote nutritional health. Find out more at LookRavishing.com .
