Nutritional Health Supplements: Excessive Exercise And The Immune System

We probably all know that moderate exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but did you know those who undertake a high level of exercise might need nutritional health supplements, as the immune system can be damaged?

Interestingly, Professor Greg Whyte of John Moore’s University, Liverpool points out that elite athletes, such as those training for the Olympics have a particular problem with infection especially if their nutrition is not carefully maintained. The body has a greater strain placed upon it and has to work harder so the immune system needs to be in top condition.

Research has shown that more than ninety minutes of high intensity endurance training makes sportsmen and women susceptible to illness for up to 72 hours after the exercise finishes. Stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) raise the blood pressure and cholesterol levels to aid energy but at the same time they suppress the immune system temporarily.

Amateur sportspeople can have a particularly tough time with their immune system as their professional counterparts usually have expert advice and a special diet.

This means that athletes need to ensure they have a healthy diet and sufficient recovery days to enable the body to allow the immune system to recover. Increasingly, specialized nutritional health supplements are also used to ensure top performance from the human body.

Natural Diet Supplement: Dealing With Hay Fever

This time of year can be a nuisance for those who suffer from hay fever. There are ways, such as a natural diet supplement, to offset the problems but what is hay fever and what are the other methods of dealing with it?

Hay fever is an allergy to pollen particles and varies according to which type of pollen affects you. The time of high risk lasts from the spring right through the summer.

The numbers of people suffering from hay fever has increased by 30% in the four years up to 2005 but there may be even more sufferers who sort the problem out for themselves. The figures were published in the British Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine and were the result of a study of nine million people on a General Practitioners database.

The reasons for the increase are not clear but may have something to do with the fact that we are exposed to less infection when younger so have less immunity.

It is possible for hay fever sufferers to develop asthma if the condition stays untreated.

There are a wide variety of treatments available and the most popular are antihistamine tablets and sprays but there are concerns in the medical profession that these are not suitable for everyone. Also available are steroid injections, which control the symptoms but these are discouraged now as they are linked to cataracts, skin thinning and even osteoporosis.

Practical steps can be taken too, including wearing wrap-around sunglasses to prevent pollen getting into the eyes, avoiding large expanses of grass, not mowing the lawn yourself and closing windows, especially during times of high pollen levels (generally mid-morning and early evening).

Read more about hay fever on the BBC Health website.

One way to deal with hay fever is to increase the effectiveness of your immune system with a good natural diet supplement. Proto-col are offering a large tub of their marvellous green magic superfood with a supply of the opti-msm immune system stimulant for a discount price of £64.95 (a saving of £14.95).

Nutritional Health Supplements: A Winning Combination For Skin

When choosing nutritional health supplements to ensure you have the healthiest skin, it is now clear that you should consider those that combine calcium and vitamin D.

The Journal Of Clinical Oncology reported recently on a new study by Dr. Jean Tang at the Stanford University School of Medicine that discovered evidence that this combination has great benefits for skin.

The study collected data from 36,282 women in the age range of 50 to 79 years old who were given either a supplement containing vitamin D and calcium or a placebo. The initial intention was to see if the nutritional health supplements given had an effect on the number of hip fractures or colon cancer but, during the seven year follow up from the project, it was discovered that the subjects who had previously experienced non-melanoma skin cancer reduced the risk of melanoma by 57 per cent, compared to those not taking the supplement.

The next stage is to try the combination on cancer cells directly to see if there is an effect.

Ironically the best source of vitamin D other than nutritional health supplements is sunlight. Of course the problem is the ultra violet rays also cause skin cancer too.

Tips To Beautiful Skin: Free Radicals And Antioxidants

Girl doing exercises on Morro Strand State Beach, California

Have you ever read any health information, such as tips to beautiful skin, and seen references to ‘free radicals’ and ‘antioxidants’ and not been sure what these are?

Here are a couple of very short explanations.

Free Radicals are atoms or groups of atoms that have at least one unpaired electron and in the body these are often oxygen atoms. This means the incomplete atoms bounce around the body with high energy and damage any cells with which they come into contact. Often these damaged cells also produce their own free radicals following the collision.

The best known antioxidants are vitamins A, C and E. These protect cells from the damage wrought by free radicals by donating one of their own electrons and stabilising them.

Antioxidants are very stable so are not diminished or damaged by contact with free radicals.

So one of the tips to beautiful skin is protect your skin from free radicals by applying products containing antioxidants.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 4: Natural Diet Supplement And Maintaining Calcium Levels

Pretty Ballerina Dancing On Decking

You probably know it is worth keeping up your levels of calcium in the body, either through a healthy diet or a good natural diet supplement, and that calcium is important for bones and teeth but did you know your muscles depend on calcium too?

It’s true. Muscles cramp without enough of this useful substance and even the nerves controlling muscles need calcium to operate properly. One of the signs of a lack of calcium is muscle twitch (called tetany) and in extreme cases the heart muscles can fail.

If you do not have enough calcium the muscles will rob the bones to get their supply and exacerbate the problem of brittle bones, leading to an increased chance of osteoporosis.

Make sure that you have enough calcium in your diet or you take a calcium natural diet supplement now to ensure your body’s strength and function later.

Calcium is more important to the body than you realise.

To ensure your calcium health with an excellent natural diet supplement, visit LookRavishing.com.

New Calcium Natural Diet Supplement

Fabulous Arched Backflip by Londons Festival Pier

Last year the Duchess of Cornwall had a fall and broke both her legs. Both her mother and grandmother suffered from osteoporosis, or brittle bone disease, and the Duchess is the President of the National Osteoporosis Society: the fear was that she too was suffering from the condition.

According to statistics from the International Osteoporosis Foundation, an estimated 75 million people in the USA, Europe and Japan suffer from brittle bones and there were around 9 million new osteoporotic fractures during the year 2000. The cost of treating sufferers is estimated at $5.2 billion each year. In women over 45 years of age, osteoporosis accounts for more days in hospital than many other diseases, including breast cancer and diabetes.

The problem is going to get worse too. 1 in 3 women over the age of 65 are prone to fractures, as are 1 in 5 men. By the year 2050 the number of people in Europe and America living beyond the age of 80 is set to triple.

So how can we avoid becoming part of these statistics?

Calcium is the substance that hardens the bones. Actually the real strength in the bones comes from a combination of collagen and calcium. Minerals such as calcium bind to the collagen to form bone.

But it is not just the bones that benefit from calcium. The substance is abundant in the body and maintains the strength of nails and teeth too.

It was the case that we would simply drink lots of milk to build up the calcium levels in our bodies and this has been largely successful in the past. However it is becoming widely accepted that over farming has lead to a reduction in the goodness we receive from various foodstuffs and this is beginning to be understood in the case of the calcium benefits of milk too.

Unfortunately too many cows are being fed on artificial feedstuffs and even those grazing on open meadows may be eating grass reduced in nutrition.

So what do we do then?

While calcium is still found in milk, we need to use nutritional health supplements to increase the calcium we take in. During the Proto-col National Conference earlier this year Managing Director of Proto-col, James Greenwell, launched a new Calcium Complex capsule.

This new product contains both calcium and collagen to help to strengthen bones. However there are other trace substances and vitamins included to ensure bone health and indeed the absorption of calcium to where it is needed.

The figures on osteoporosis are sobering but I think we all owe it to ourselves to give our bodies’ structure the strength it requires for good health and safe living.

The emergence of any new and effective natural diet supplement should be welcomed.

The Wartime Diet And Nutritional Health Supplements

Vegetable Display Including Carrots

The wartime generation from the nineteen forties in Britain are generally considered to be perhaps the most healthy generation of all. Why is that? Could their experiences help us understand why there is so much obesity in the western world today and why so many of us need to take nutritional health supplements.

For around fourteen years the supply of food was severely restricted mostly due to the attempted blockade of supplies by the German navy. It has to be remembered that around 70% of the country’s food was imported before the war.

So started a culture of minimal waste, innovative recipes and the famous ‘Dig For Victory’ campaign that created vegetable plots from most available areas of land. Equally of course everyone was motivated to be more active in his or her life and, in any case, life was more physical as the world of labour saving devices had not yet arrived.

Sugar was radically restricted too so unnecessary consumption of that potentially unhealthy substance was reduced.

The reality was everyone had to think carefully about what they ate. Perhaps we should do the same now.

Modern thinking tells us to eat a minimum amount of fruit and vegetables to gain the nutrition we require. In Britain at present the figure is said to be five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Supermarkets have indeed latched on to this for marketing their own fresh produce.

However I have to sound a note of caution here. How do we know the nutritional content of each individual item of fruit or each portion of vegetables?

The truth is we do not know. Of course we read that carrots contain so much goodness and spinach too and all the other lines we eat. But did you know the content varies considerably depending on how or where the items were grown?

In 1940 a cupful of spinach contained around 150 milligrams of iron, now it is believed to be around two milligrams. Some nutritional experts are saying the daily allocation of fruit and vegetables should be increased from five to eight servings, even perhaps as high as twenty.

Grow Your Own Vegetables Wartime Poster

Why are we getting less from our food?

The problem arises from the production, transportation and storage of the food. To grow fresh produce in sufficient amounts, faster and so in a more cost effective manner, producers are growing the appropriate plants in an artificial environment. As the environment can be controlled, factors can be altered; for example, through the use of artificial light, days can be shortened so the plants grow faster and mature in less time. The downside of this is the nutrients have less time to form. No wonder the natural diet supplement industry is booming.

Another problem is the extensive use of fertilizers, which can leach nutrients from the ground, and incorrect rotation of land ensuring the goodness cannot be returned to the soil.

Now we have another clue as to why the wartime generation was more healthy. Remember their fruit and vegetables were often home grown and certainly without the ‘advantages’ of modern production. Also their cattle grazed on grass and not on artificial feedstuffs. The nutritional content of the food was better.

Another aspect of life in the 1940s that differs greatly from today is the concept of so-called ‘fast food’ had hardly taken off. Of course there were fish and chips available but even then the fish was likely to be fairly fresh and nobody could afford to overeat in any case.

Now we have a great variety of foods available and there is little restriction on what we eat. Sweets and chocolates are very common (remember the American troops arriving in Britain during the Second World War could bribe people with otherwise scarce chocolate) and fats food outlets are very common. Processed foods containing a wide range of additives and preservatives are sold in high volumes.

It is not entirely clear exactly what illnesses are caused by the modern diet but it seems likely poor nutrition is the cause of quite a few. So many people need nutrition health supplements.

We should take heed of the lessons provided by the austere wartime diet and the difference in health between then and now. A change to a healthier balanced diet (perhaps with more home grown or at least locally bought produce), more exercise and nutritional health supplements will probably make a huge difference to our health.

Hyaluronic Acid And How It Can Help Us

Stunning Oriental Girl With Lovely Eyes

You may be the same as me and have never heard of hyaluronic acid, which is a pity as it is quite a useful substance in terms of skincare.

This substance is key in moisturizing the skin as it can hold a thousand times its own weight in water. This is significant as it carries the water around the body to where it is needed. It works with elastin and most particularly collagen to provide benefits in many parts of the body, particularly in hydrating the skin and repairing cartilage. It also helps in repairing scar tissue so has benefits to new mothers and sufferers of acne. Other benefits include faster repairing wounds and relief from arthritis (as it helps lubricate joints.)

Collagen molecules provide the structure into which hyaluronic acid locks moisture.

Hyaluronic acid is one of the substances that deteriorate with age; we lose significant amounts from the age of eighteen and, combined with the loss of collagen, leads to lines and wrinkles later in life.

It hardly seems surprising that this substance is affected by ultra violet light when you consider excess sunlight leads to premature aging and wrinkles. This process has been linked to skin cancer too.

The body is unable to produce sufficient hyaluronic acid in later years so one of the more useful healthy skin tips you could receive would be to find a way to reintroduce this acid into the body. Previously the only method was to inject affected areas with doses (and this is presently the only way yet approved by the US Food and Drug Administration) but of course this involves potential problems such as skin bruising and indeed the fear of injections.

In February the Proto-col company in the United Kingdom introduced it’s Skin Plus capsules, which combine collagen and hyaluronic acid in one easy to take dose. Just for good measure, each natural diet supplement capsule includes a range of useful vitamins too. Proto-col believe this new product represents a significant step forward in skincare.
