How Fast Food Affects Nutrition and Your Health

Burger and French Fries Lying on a Table

Obesity and diabetes are becoming all-too common problems, with the World Health Organization estimating there are 347 million people worldwide with diabetes and 200 million considered obese.

Eating the wrong foods can have an effect on nutrition and your health and leads to excess body weight and conditions such as diabetes. One of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is to watch what you eat and avoid fast foods as much as possible.

One of the reasons conditions such as obesity and diabetes has become such a problem is the easy access to fast food. To many, the fare offered by many food chains tastes good, is cheap and readily available. Sadly it also lacks the nutrients our bodies require and contains too much sugar, salt, fat and chemicals.

Salt (sodium chloride) contains 40% sodium. Excessive sodium increases blood pressure, leading to cardiovascular diseases, stroke and hypertension. There is some evidence too that indicates sodium can reduce the calcium content of bones, so weakening them, and can damage the kidney.

But it is not just salt that damages nutrition and your health. The Daily Mail recently reported on a study that found the combination of additives found in foods such as fried chicken and chips (French fries) could also affect the liver to the degree found in hepatitis sufferers.

The lack of nutrients in fast food means the good effects from eating a meal are short-lived. The sugar found in many foods may give the consumer a short burst of energy but this results in a greater energy crash when the effects wear off. Soon after eating a fast food meal, people find they experience fatigue and mood swings leading to a need for another sugary intake.

Eating the right wholesome foods with the right vitamins and minerals would mean the body finds an optimum operational level and so energy levels continue at a more constant rate. Performance improves with the correct diet.

Of course many fast foods also contain large quantities of saturated fats, an excess of which will lead to overweight and obesity. This will result in an increased danger of heart disease and diabetes as well as operational problems resulting from carrying extra weight, such as arthritis and joint damage.

Other studies have found that fats food affects nutrition and your health in other ways too. A further Daily Mail article reported on studies that discovered skin problems in children who regularly consumed fast foods. Teenagers eating regular fast food meals had an increased risk of severe eczema or rhinitis. The same article also points to results showing an increase of asthma cases related to fast food consumption.

Another worrying effect of fast foods has been highlighted by a study undertaken by the University of Liverpool. It seems the regular consumption of fast foods can also damage the function of the brain; an excess of triglycerides fats and inflammatory molecules as a result of eating fatty foods prevents hormones from protecting and encouraging the growth of neurons in the brain.

Fortunately the same study found the consumption of Omega-3- rich foods (such as oily fish) or supplements could reduce the damage.

Clearly one of the key ways to have a healthy lifestyle is to reduce the amount of fast foods we eat and replace them with locally produced, fresh food: especially fruit and vegetables. If more nutrition is needed then a good supplement containing natural ingredients should be considered.

Reducing Cholesterol as One of the Ways to Lead a Healthy Lifestyle

Stunning Brunette in a Black Dress

More and more people are trying to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle and yet the biggest killer in the United Kingdom, the United States and many other countries is heart disease. It makes sense for us all to deal with the causes of this killer and find ways to avoid them.

Heart disease can be the effect of several things, including age, your sex (men develop cardiovascular disease more than women), ethnicity, smoking, high blood pressure and excess weight. Heart problems can also be inherited. One of the most significant causes however is a high level of cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol is actually useful to the body. It is a fat produced by the liver and is used in the construction of every cell in the human body. It is naturally carried in the blood for use around the body and has a wide range of uses. Cholesterol helps in the production of hormones (including sex hormones), insulates nerve fibres, determines which substances can pass through cell walls, helps produce bile, breaks down certain vitamins for use in the body (such as vitamins A, D, E and K) and changes Ultra Violet rays from the sun into vitamin D. So a lot of uses then.

Reference is often made to ‘bad’ and ‘good’ cholesterol. So-called bad cholesterol is termed LDL (low density lipoprotein) and it carries cholesterol from the liver. It is this version that causes the problems whenever there is an excess. The HDL (high density lipoprotein) on the other hand removes the cholesterol and returns it to the liver to be broken down or passed out of the body as waste. The HDL is the good cholesterol.

As with so many substances however, too much causes problems. High levels of cholesterol cause a variety of problems for the heart. The arteries can become narrow and blocked, the muscles of the heart cannot receive enough oxygen or a blood clot can block one of the key blood vessels.

So how do we ensure the correct level of cholesterol in our bodies?

As ever we should be looking for ways to lead a healthy lifestyle: we need to undertake regular exercise, get enough sleep (8 hours a night for many of us), drink alcohol only in moderation and avoid or stop smoking tobacco. Perhaps the most significant thing we can do however is to have a healthy diet.

Ensuring the right levels of nutrition in our diet is important to the fight against excess cholesterol. It works best in combination with the other methods above but it is still important. We need to eat the obviously healthy foods, such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and oats but also ensure we get enough of the right fats. We need to reduce the level of saturated fats we consume and eat more of those rich in Omega-3: this can be found in rapeseed oil, olive oil and oily fish (salmon is a good example).

I think we all owe it to ourselves to ensure we find ways to have a healthy lifestyle and look after our hearts by controlling cholesterol.

Nutrition and Your Health: Nutrition During Pregnancy

Black and White Image of Pregnant Lady in Front of a Window

There are few more stages in a woman’s life that disrupt nutrition and your health than pregnancy. On one hand your body is under stress and on the other you are trying to give your inborn baby the best start in life.

During this joyful time it is worth looking after your nutrition and your health. This is a great time to ensure you are as fit and healthy as you can be and, apart from anything else, you give yourself and your child the best opportunity to get the most from the experience.

Obviously the best way to ensure you get the best nutrition is to eat a healthy diet, as it always is, but during pregnancy there are vitamins and minerals that need a boost. You could stuff yourself with the foods that get you the extra nutrition but this is not always possible, perhaps as a result of your lifestyle or the lack of opportunity.

The best way to make sure you get the goodness both you and your baby need is to start a regime of good quality vitamin supplements that use natural ingredients.

So which nutrients will you need?

First of all, it is always worth consulting your doctor before taking any supplements, particularly to ensure it fits in with any treatment you may already be receiving with regard to pregnancy. However, all expecting mothers will need more of the basic building blocks of life including folic acid, vitamins C and D, calcium and iron.

To find out more about nutrition and your health during pregnancy, the National Health Service website has some useful information, as does the US News Health website.

Whatever happens it is worth getting your nutrition and your health right to ensure things go as well as possible and having your baby is as joyous an event as it should be.

Visit LookRavishing.com for a range of high quality nutrition supplements that can help you enjoy life at every stage.

Nutrition and Your Health: Bioprene

Beautiful Afro Caribbean Lady In Green and White Bikini

Many of us are looking for ways to have a healthy lifestyle, decide to use regular vitamin supplements and yet are confused by the plethora of ingredients available.

One substance found in certain supplements is bioprene.

Black pepper has been seen as a healthy spice for centuries and is the worlds’ most traded spice, the majority coming from Vietnam. A wide range of illnesses was considered to be cured by black pepper: among them were gangrene, heart disease, indigestion, liver problems, lung diseases, insect bites and constipation.

Bioprene is an extract of black pepper and contains the active ingredient piperine, considered to be responsible for many of the health benefits attributed to black pepper.

In the few relevant studies available, bioprene is widely believed to help the absorption of nutrients in the gut, such as beta-carotene, selenium and vitamins B6 and C, but piperine has been shown to promote the metabolism and the production of energy. Thermogensis is the process of energy production from fat within the body and it is this piperine boosts. For this reason, bioprene is an important constituent of some slimming pills and supplements for athletes, bodybuilders and other sportspeople.

A faster metabolism means consumed food will digest faster, fats will be burned and nutrients will be absorbed at a quicker rate. Clearly it makes sense to use bioprene to encourage a more efficient use of nutrients.

Studies dating from some years ago suggested there might be a toxic quality to black peppers but the increased usage in recent years has proved this conclusion was inaccurate.

If you are looking for ways to have a healthy lifestyle then products including bioprene may be a part of that.

Proto-col’s Thermo-slim product contains bioprene to aid your metabolism. Find out more at LookRavishing.com.

Health And Nutrition Articles: Nutrition For Your Eyes

Beautiful Lady With Brown Eyes Looking Into The Camera

Ensuring the correct nutrition is one of the key ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. The body’s processes rely on the consumption of vitamins and minerals to function.

Each part of the body benefits from a slightly different concoction of substances to ensure optimum performance.

The eyes, for example, require certain vitamins and minerals. Research has shown that increasing the level of these nutrients can help prevent or even reverse certain eye conditions.

Folk lore has always told us how carrots are good for seeing in the dark and in reality eating carrots could indeed be one of the ways to have a healthy lifestyle – certainly as far as the eyes are concerned.

Carrots, spinach, kale and butternut squash all contain beta-carotine, which, when combined with vitamins C and E can reduce the level of macular degeneration in the eyes.

This is also true of Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel and herring) and in walnuts. Omega-3 can also prevent dry eyes.

Green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, and eggs provide Lutein and Zeaxanthin and this also reduces the risk of chronic eye diseases. Cataracts and the effects of age can be held at bay using these two substances.

Vitamins C and E have already been mentioned and these two act as powerful antioxidants, protecting the cells of the eyes from free radicals, which can break down the healthy tissue in the eyes.

It is wise therefore to ensure you maintain your nutrition in order to prevent problems with your eyes.

You should of course use a healthy, balanced diet as one of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle but taking a good quality health supplement could back this up. Go to LookRavishing.com to discover new March offers on nutritional supplements.

Way To Have A Healthy Lifestyle With Protocol In 2013

Beautiful Slim Lady In Red Top Posing For The Camera

You may have seen a few health and nutrition articles helping you decide on ways to have a healthy lifestyle in the year ahead. We have come up with a couple here on BeRavishing.com.

To coincide with the start of 2013 those clever people at Proto-col have also relaunched the health and beauty brand to help you look and feel great this year. They have examined the ways to have a healthy lifestyle available and have introduced new promotional packs to help you achieve them.

At this time of year especially, we feel down and unhealthy and it is times like this that we need a boost to our nutrition. Proto-col are offering a ‘Health and Wellbeing’ twin pack of the potent Green Magic multivitamin power and a vitamin D supplement.

Green Magic is largely tasteless and can be consumed in a variety of ways. One contributor on Twitter recently revealed she sprinkled the powder on ice cream but the more common method is to mix it in with your morning fruit juice.

Vitamin D is becoming better known now as a promoter of calcium in the body (and so giving healthier bones and teeth) but it is an important element in an effective immune system. In this way it could help us avoid the common cold. Recent research has also shown other benefits from the consumption of this useful vitamin such as reducing the risk of multiple sclerosis, ensuring good brain function and maintaining a healthy body weight.

Ensuring that healthy body weight is also the focus of another of the promotion packs from Proto-col. Green Magic is also included in the ‘2013 Weight Loss Program’ pack, which includes Thermo-Slim and Carb Blocker too.

Thermo-Slim assists the consumption of a healthy diet by using herbal technology to suppress feelings of hunger and boost the metabolism. This ensures you feel more motivated to take exercise and find your ideal size. Thermo-Slim is free of the potentially addictive Ephedrine.

Ephedrine is also excluded from Proto-col’s Carb Blocker. This product is derived from white kidney beans and blocks the enzymes responsible for the digestion of carbohydrates. This reduces the conversion of starch into glucose and so helps control body weight. Carb Blocker is safe enough to be used permanently and is safe for diabetics.

To find these two and other promotional packs in their new, striking packaging, why not visit LookRavishing.com?

Until now, the great products from Proto-col have only been restricted to selected areas of the globe but during 2013 new international distributors will be launched, this ensuring that many more people discover the ways to have a healthy lifestyle offered by Proto-col.

Ways To Lead A Healthy Lifestyle: Taking Care Over What We Eat

Young Lady Looking At Her Healthy Restaurant Lunch

Once again we greet a new year and once again we reflect on how we could have done things better over the last twelve months. I suspect many of us will be looking for ways to lead a healthy lifestyle in the future and will be setting our New Year resolutions accordingly.

The other day I had a conversation with the proprietor of a local gymnasium and he was telling me how he loves this time of year. It seems there is a huge surge in membership applications from people joining his club trying to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle in the year ahead. What such businessmen love is a large proportion of the people who sign up use the facilities once or twice and then stop going. Many of them forget to cancel their membership as they fool themselves they will start going again when the situation is right.

At the same time, a great deal of us looking for ways to lead a healthy lifestyle will be signing up to various diet fads and may even be losing weight as a result. Statistics have shown that around 50% of women and 25% of men are following a restrictive diet and the weight loss industry in the USA alone is worth around $40 billion a year. Sadly there are problems with this way of life. Firstly many people who come off a diet frequently gain the weight they previously lost and many diets leave the dieter short on essential nutrients.

So what is one of the best ways to lead a healthy lifestyle? Actually the answer is, and always has been, to change to living a balanced life with a combination of the right diet, exercise and, well, just living sensibly.

What does this mean to our daily diet?

Many dieters, in trying to find ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, work against the needs of their bodies. To be most effective we need to work with our bodies. Firstly we need to eat a balanced diet including a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables. The human body works best when it is receiving all the vitamins and minerals it needs to support all its functions. We need to eat three meals a day and include a balanced selection of foods that provide the goodness our body needs.

This of course requires discipline and the first of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle is to ensure we make breakfast the most important meal of the day, If you think about it, what we eat early in the day has time to provide the energy for the day and any excess is burnt off before we go to bed. For this reason, lunch should be reasonably substantial too but the last meal of the day (dinner or supper) should be light. My own experience has shown that eating too much too late in the day can actually prevent my getting a good nights sleep. The old adage ‘Breakfast like a king, lunch like a Prince, dine like a pauper’ has always been true.

It is important to ensure we have the nutrients the body needs to work effectively. In particular the immune system deserves to be kept at it’s best to fight off any diseases that might attack. Recent research suggests that the immune system may even destroy up to 90% of cancers before we are even aware of them. There is a school of thought that believes most diseases and medical conditions become a problem through bad nutrition.

Dieters can also sadly and ironically affect their health in their quest to lead what they see as ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. Eating disorders are becoming all too common among both men and women. The BBC report that hospital admissions for eating disorders rose by 16% last year as we pursue the ‘perfect’ body. Yet, in my opinion, the perfect body for each person is best achieved through the suggestions I am making today.

It is worth researching the food you eat and discovering how it can contribute to the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Understanding what we eat is part of the battle. Using organic, unadulterated fresh foods has to be good for us, particularly as the ill effects of pesticides, additives and other chemicals has yet to be fully understood, and I am concerned about putting alien substances through our bodies. For this reason I buy most of what I eat from local farm shops and farmers markets. By far the best way to ensure the quality of the food you eat is to grow your own: you also gain a certain satisfaction too.

If you do have concerns about the level of nutrients you consume, it might not be a bad idea to also include some food supplements based on natural products. Such a range can be found on the LookRavishing.com website.

Next time I will look at other ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Health And Beauty Tip Number 11: Nutrition Is Easier For The Whole Family

Mother And Child Trying An Apple With Flowers In Foreground Healthy Skin Tips

If you are a parent and are looking for ways to have a healthy lifestyle, you may find it difficult if the rest of the family are still stuck in unhealthy habits.

No matter who believes it, one of the best healthy skin tips and ways to generally avoid many illnesses and the subsequent drugs frequently prescribed, is to find one of the ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. One of the biggest influences is diet and nutrition.

Most caring parents tend to run their lives according to the needs of their family and often neglect their own health. The tip today is to involve the whole family in your drive to be healthier.

If you can, why not grow some fruit and/or vegetables in your garden or window box? You could even take your children to a farm or somewhere else to see their food growing. Take time out to buy food from a local market, cook food from fresh and give your children responsibility for a part of the work. Explain to them how nutrition works and how it affects the working of their bodies.

It is quite likely that you may need to take a good quality nutrition supplement to ensure you have the goodness you need – explore the ingredients with your family and involve them in the decision regarding which supplements to take.

Most children love to learn through fun methods and will embrace nutrition in this way. Fortunately many schools are also teaching more about cooking and nutrition so you may find yourself working alongside their school activities.

This article on the AARP blog explains how some volunteers are teaching children in America about the food they eat.

Collagen Benefits: Our Modern Loss Of Collagen

Collagen benefits the human body in many ways, not least in the strengthening of connective tissues, such as cartilage and ligaments. Athletes have noticed the benefits of collagen after they have damaged connective tissues and have been put on a course of collagen capsules to rebuild the damage.

As we get older we lose collagen in our bodies and so our skin and joints start to suffer. Osteoarthritis is becoming a serious problem in many ageing people in the world. It has been estimated that one in three people in the USA suffer from this condition, brought about by the deterioration of the tissues around the joint. In particular the cartilage that covers and cushions the bones in a joint wears away and bone grates upon bone. Obviously this causes the bones to erode.

Equally, obesity and being overweight is a very modern problem. A recent US study, named National Health and Nutrition Survey III, found that between 1999-2000 65% of Americans were overweight and 31% obese. Six out of every ten children are either overweight or obese. We can expect a similar reading in several other countries.

Extra body weight places extra stress on the joints and, if the levels of collagen are already reducing (perhaps through ageing, heredity, stress or other medical conditions), the deterioration of movement and increase in pain will be pronounced. Sadly a lack of vitamins in our food can only help to damage the body’s ability to repair any damage and, as much obesity also comes from consumption of low-nutrition fast foods, this can only make things even worse.

Not surprisingly, an increasing number of men and women are looking for ways to have a healthy lifestyle and around half of woman over the age of 50 are taking vitamin supplements regularly. Around 40% of men are doing the same.

Some supplements have been shown to have a beneficial effect of joint disease, including omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, ginger, gamma-linolenic acid and chondrotin sulfate. Dr. Kristine Clark of Pennsylvania State University has noted the benefits of collagen hydrolysate on the symptoms and may indeed increase cartilage regeneration.

Bear in mind that any nutrition supplements will only help improve health when used in other ways to lead a healthy lifestyle, such as moderate exercise, weight reduction and a balanced healthy diet.

Proto-col presently offer a three-for-two offer on their range of collagen hydrolysate capsules. Discover more at LookRavishing.com.

Healthy And Beauty Tip Number 8: Collagen Benefits The Eyes

Pretty Brunette Lady Smiling Into Camera

The lips often draw the eye when cosmetics are correctly used but once you get closer to the person behind the makeup, the eyes become more important. Did you know that collagen benefits your eyes as well as other parts of the body?

We all want clear, healthy-looking eyes (they are, after all, the window to the soul) so it makes sense to look after them as much as possible.

As usual, nutrition is important; eat lots of fruit and vegetables to give the eyes the goodness they require to operate correctly. Regular moderate exercise helps the operations of the human body and studies have shown this also reduces the risk of macular degeneration, a particular problem affecting the eyes.

Avoid smoking or smoky atmospheres or any other airborne pollution as the eyes have little defence against these. Protect the eyes whenever necessary by using goggles where foreign bodies could fly up (or when welding) or use sunglasses in strong light.

Have you ever had a photograph taken of the inside of your eyes when at the opticians? By doing this, many diseases affecting the rest of the body can be identified. This indicates how the eyes are closely connected to the rest of us.

Be careful when applying makeup as chemicals from cosmetics can irritate the eyes. Mineral makeup powder is less likely to affect the eyes but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Collagen benefits the eyes by making them firm but strong by reinforcing the tissues therein so you might consider a course of collagen capsules with your daily multivitamins.

Many of us spend money making our eyes look good on the outside but there is no substitute for healthy, clear eyes and this is only achieved by nutrition, protection and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Take a look at the Protocol collagen and range of mineral powder makeup to be found at LookRavishing.com.
