Nutritional Health Supplements: Excessive Exercise And The Immune System

We probably all know that moderate exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but did you know those who undertake a high level of exercise might need nutritional health supplements, as the immune system can be damaged?

Interestingly, Professor Greg Whyte of John Moore’s University, Liverpool points out that elite athletes, such as those training for the Olympics have a particular problem with infection especially if their nutrition is not carefully maintained. The body has a greater strain placed upon it and has to work harder so the immune system needs to be in top condition.

Research has shown that more than ninety minutes of high intensity endurance training makes sportsmen and women susceptible to illness for up to 72 hours after the exercise finishes. Stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) raise the blood pressure and cholesterol levels to aid energy but at the same time they suppress the immune system temporarily.

Amateur sportspeople can have a particularly tough time with their immune system as their professional counterparts usually have expert advice and a special diet.

This means that athletes need to ensure they have a healthy diet and sufficient recovery days to enable the body to allow the immune system to recover. Increasingly, specialized nutritional health supplements are also used to ensure top performance from the human body.

Natural Diet Supplement: Dealing With Hay Fever

This time of year can be a nuisance for those who suffer from hay fever. There are ways, such as a natural diet supplement, to offset the problems but what is hay fever and what are the other methods of dealing with it?

Hay fever is an allergy to pollen particles and varies according to which type of pollen affects you. The time of high risk lasts from the spring right through the summer.

The numbers of people suffering from hay fever has increased by 30% in the four years up to 2005 but there may be even more sufferers who sort the problem out for themselves. The figures were published in the British Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine and were the result of a study of nine million people on a General Practitioners database.

The reasons for the increase are not clear but may have something to do with the fact that we are exposed to less infection when younger so have less immunity.

It is possible for hay fever sufferers to develop asthma if the condition stays untreated.

There are a wide variety of treatments available and the most popular are antihistamine tablets and sprays but there are concerns in the medical profession that these are not suitable for everyone. Also available are steroid injections, which control the symptoms but these are discouraged now as they are linked to cataracts, skin thinning and even osteoporosis.

Practical steps can be taken too, including wearing wrap-around sunglasses to prevent pollen getting into the eyes, avoiding large expanses of grass, not mowing the lawn yourself and closing windows, especially during times of high pollen levels (generally mid-morning and early evening).

One way to deal with hay fever is to increase the effectiveness of your immune system with a good natural diet supplement. Proto-col are offering a large tub of their marvellous green magic superfood with a supply of the opti-msm immune system stimulant for a discount price of £64.95 (a saving of £14.95).

Nutritional Health Supplements: The Dangers Of Dieting

It seems that every day we see an advertisement for some great weight loss plan that will turn us into a supermodel in days. At the same time the magazines and Internet are full of products with the same claims.

The truth is our bodies run on nutrition; we need certain vitamins and minerals to function. The danger of suddenly adopting a radical programme of weight loss is we will not give the body the nutrition it needs. Reducing a food group will remove the nutrition that group may provide.

Fad diets may help you lose some weight but only in the short term and goodness knows what damage they could do to your nutrition.

Remove all the hype and you start to understand the way the body works. The weight loss industry makes billions of dollars every year and yet obesity is an increasing problem. The reason for this is there is only really one way to gain and keep a healthy weight; you have to eat a healthy diet, not too much, and get regular exercise.

This is why obesity is a modern problem. Go back in history and you will find that life was more physical and there was little time for the body to collect excess fats. Indeed the problem was more a case of a lack of nutrition through poor diet. Some fad diets come close to replicating this ancient problem, despite a better choice of healthy foods and nutritional health supplements.

Stress was a useful reaction as it flooded the body with adrenaline ready to fight or flee from a threat. Modern stress creates the same reaction but involves a mental response and the adrenaline and energy remains uselessly in the body.

If you think about it we collect excess fats in our bodies over a long period of time. It would be foolish to suppose we can remove them quickly. In some cases such a weight reduction could cause unhealthy stresses on the body anyway. The key is to switch to a healthy balance of the correct foods and regular exercise. Fad diets often run the risk of removing the nutrition we need.

The best diet contains a good range of assorted natural foods as these are what makes the body work most effectively. Obviously fruit and vegetables are key to this and a good intake of water keeps everything hydrated and functioning. The best foods have to be home grown or locally sourced as they contain the best range of vitamins and minerals.

Exercise does not necessarily mean a trip to the gym. In fact, the best exercise involves something you can do every day without too much effort. Ditch the car for short trips and instead take a bicycle or even walk. Housework and gardening, using manual tools where possible, can provide gentle aerobic exercise and getting a pet dog gives you a great excuse for long walks.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle does not involve magic solutions but rather understanding what you eat, improve the quality of your food, reduce the quantity if necessary, eating regularly and exercising regularly. If you are worried about your nutrition levels you might consider nutritional health supplements, perhaps a multi-vitamin containing natural ingredients, but special weight reduction diets and products are rarely needed.

Tips To Beautiful Skin: Avoid These Ingredients

Recently I published some information on how best to combat acne through nutrition. Of course the best tips for beautiful skin tell us that nutrition is important for healthy skin at any age.

Some of the ingredients in food that affect the health of our skin are fairly obvious and others are quite surprising.

Interestingly the hormones in milk can promote skin conditions such as acne. The level of hormones is increasing in milk too so this is becoming a problem.

Sodium nitrate is used as a preservative in processed meats and has been linked to several cancer types. Processed meats also contain other ingredients to damage skin such as various salts and fats.

As so often, it is always advisable to eat as naturally as you can. The best way is to grow your own food or buy locally from producers as you can check the ingredients with them directly.

It is also insufficient to expect mass produced foods to provide the nutrients you need for a healthy skin and body generally so you might consider adding vitamins and minerals with a good natural diet supplement.

Natural Diet Supplement: French Report Says A Balanced Diet Is Best

More confirmation that a balanced, healthy diet and moderate exercise has come from the French food safety agency, ANSES (Administracion Nacional de la Seguridad Social).

The agency has issued a report examining the role of nutrition in reducing the rise of cancer within the country. It also discusses the reduction of certain foods known to have an adverse effect in health. They conclude it is a combination of a healthy diet that works best, with no specific food or natural diet supplement combating cancer alone.

Read more about this report on Foodnavigator.com.

With the lack of nutrients in the modern diet, even in mass-produced fruit and vegetables, it is often a good idea to take a good natural diet supplement to boost your nutrition.

Nutritional Health Supplements: The Importance Of Teenage Nutrition

Most parents fear their children’s teenage years and the connotations involved. The expectations involve rows, late nights, puberty, boyfriends or girlfriends and so on and yet the biggest problems are likely to involve the significant physiological changes that take place.

Teenage years are those in which growth accelerates and the body sets itself up for adulthood. This is the time to ensure their nutrition is as it should be and perhaps consider if nutritional health supplements are needed. The body needs to be properly prepared for the stresses placed upon it during this time.

Of course another feature of this life stage is rebellion so many wise parents set up good eating habits early as the core of good nutrition. But however canny parents are, the goodness or otherwise going into their offsprings’ bodies needs to be understood, as is the demand their bodies have for the nutrition.

One key need for growing teenagers is for iron. A study in the United Kingdom showed that 13% of adolescent boys and 27% of girls the same age have low levels of iron. Iron is needed to help the blood carry oxygen to the muscles, an important function as teenagers are, and should be encouraged to be, very active. Adolescent brains are under great stress too, with growth and school examinations, and iron helps the brain function. We should not forget as well that iron is essential to the function of the immune system.

Young women particularly find their levels of iron will deplete after menstruation.

Foods that are good sources of iron include red meat but alternatives exist in the form of dried fruit, bread, breakfast cereals and green leafy vegetables. Although diet is the best source of all nutrients, nutritional health supplements can also be considered.  Eating vitamin C rich foods (such as citrus fruit) or nutritional health supplements will also help the absorption of iron but interestingly tea is to be avoided. The tannins in tea have been found to interfere with iron intake so perhaps a fruit juice would be better.

With the growth spurt experienced by teenagers, it is hardly surprising that calcium is also an important substance during this time.  Calcium is essential to bone development and research has shown effective bone development in adolescent years has a significant impact on future skeleton strength. Studies have suggested a 5% increase in teenage bone mass can result in a 40% decrease in bone fractures later in life.

The brittle bone disease, osteoporosis, can be largely avoided in later years by foresight in nutrition during the teens. Regrettably the UK National Diet And Nutrition Survey Of Young People Aged 4-18 Years has shown that 25% of teenagers have calcium levels lower than the recommended level. This infers a later bone health problem.

As well as nutritional health supplements, of course, good sources of calcium include dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese.

As always there is no substitute for a healthy diet and regular meals are essential to health for a teenager.  Unfortunately the adolescent’s usual foods of choice tend to be fatty and sugar-rich foods and drinks.  In fact the best foods they can consume would be starchy carbohydrates (bread, rice, potatoes), lots of fruit and vegetables, dairy products and two servings of protein (meat, fish, eggs) per day. Six to eight glasses of fluid a day are useful too and don’t forget that regular exercise, which helps fitness, cardiovascular health and bone growth.

Modern teenage complications have made things more difficult. Peer pressure and mass media has lead many young people to turn to methods of slimming. As always, a healthy diet and moderate exercise will always produce the ‘perfect’ for anyone but fad diets are employed too often. These frequently reduce the nutrients going into the body and can sometimes even result in eating disorders.

The twin eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia, affect 1.6 million people in the UK and some 6 to 11 million in the US. Although particularly a female problem, it also affects a significant number of males. If you suspect your teenager is suffering from this dangerous affliction, please get professional help immediately.

Teenage nutrition can be a fascinating subject and a good way to ensure your children understand what they should be eating is to get them interested in preparing and cooking food from an early age. In this way they can learn to look after themselves in later years and realize what good food is like.

It is in that period between childhood and adulthood that a young person needs the best nutrition to set him or her up for life. Whether from a healthy diet or using nutritional health supplements, it is worth getting the input right.
