The wartime generation from the nineteen forties in Britain are generally considered to be perhaps the most healthy generation of all. Why is that? Could their experiences help us understand why there is so much obesity in the western world today and why so many of us need to take nutritional health supplements.

For around fourteen years the supply of food was severely restricted mostly due to the attempted blockade of supplies by the German navy. It has to be remembered that around 70% of the country’s food was imported before the war.

So started a culture of minimal waste, innovative recipes and the famous ‘Dig For Victory’ campaign that created vegetable plots from most available areas of land. Equally of course everyone was motivated to be more active in his or her life and, in any case, life was more physical as the world of labour saving devices had not yet arrived.

Sugar was radically restricted too so unnecessary consumption of that potentially unhealthy substance was reduced.

The reality was everyone had to think carefully about what they ate. Perhaps we should do the same now.

Modern thinking tells us to eat a minimum amount of fruit and vegetables to gain the nutrition we require. In Britain at present the figure is said to be five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Supermarkets have indeed latched on to this for marketing their own fresh produce.

However I have to sound a note of caution here. How do we know the nutritional content of each individual item of fruit or each portion of vegetables?

The truth is we do not know. Of course we read that carrots contain so much goodness and spinach too and all the other lines we eat. But did you know the content varies considerably depending on how or where the items were grown?

In 1940 a cupful of spinach contained around 150 milligrams of iron, now it is believed to be around two milligrams. Some nutritional experts are saying the daily allocation of fruit and vegetables should be increased from five to eight servings, even perhaps as high as twenty.

Why are we getting less from our food?

The problem arises from the production, transportation and storage of the food. To grow fresh produce in sufficient amounts, faster and so in a more cost effective manner, producers are growing the appropriate plants in an artificial environment. As the environment can be controlled, factors can be altered; for example, through the use of artificial light, days can be shortened so the plants grow faster and mature in less time. The downside of this is the nutrients have less time to form. No wonder the natural diet supplement industry is booming.

Another problem is the extensive use of fertilizers, which can leach nutrients from the ground, and incorrect rotation of land ensuring the goodness cannot be returned to the soil.

Now we have another clue as to why the wartime generation was more healthy. Remember their fruit and vegetables were often home grown and certainly without the ‘advantages’ of modern production. Also their cattle grazed on grass and not on artificial feedstuffs. The nutritional content of the food was better.

Another aspect of life in the 1940s that differs greatly from today is the concept of so-called ‘fast food’ had hardly taken off. Of course there were fish and chips available but even then the fish was likely to be fairly fresh and nobody could afford to overeat in any case.

Now we have a great variety of foods available and there is little restriction on what we eat. Sweets and chocolates are very common (remember the American troops arriving in Britain during the Second World War could bribe people with otherwise scarce chocolate) and fats food outlets are very common. Processed foods containing a wide range of additives and preservatives are sold in high volumes.

It is not entirely clear exactly what illnesses are caused by the modern diet but it seems likely poor nutrition is the cause of quite a few. So many people need nutrition health supplements.

We should take heed of the lessons provided by the austere wartime diet and the difference in health between then and now. A change to a healthier balanced diet (perhaps with more home grown or at least locally bought produce), more exercise and nutritional health supplements will probably make a huge difference to our health.

Adding sugar to your diet does not contribute to nutritional health as we can get all the sweetness we need in the food we eat already. However sugar is particularly unwelcome if you have a health problem such as the flu.

This surprised me until I did some research and I found sugar actually depresses the immune system.

What is perhaps better known is vitamin C is good for cold and flu prevention and treatment. This vitamin is needed for the production of phagocytes, which are the white blood corpuscles used in the destruction of harmful bacteria and viruses.

The chemical structure of glucose (the main constituent of sugar of course) is very similar to that of vitamin C. When the two come into contact a struggle ensues and glucose generally wins. The net effect is a reduced amount of vitamin C and the immune system slows right down.

The influenza virus is thus left to run riot.

But it is not just flu that benefits from the intake of sugar. Most people are aware of sugar causing diabetes but this attack on the immune system means other conditions are aggravated, such as asthma, gallstones, heart disease, hypertension, personality disorders, nervous disorders, mood swings, mental illness and even arthritis.

Sugar is lacking vitamins and minerals of course and must find them to metabolize into the body. In doing so it draws such goodness away from other parts of the body. This prevents the breakdown of cholesterol and fatty acids, which are then stored around organs and in the sub-cutaneous tissues creating obesity. This in itself promotes other illnesses.

There is some debate as to which nutritional supplements should be used for the treatment of influenza but certainly the consumption of sugar is to be avoided.

A moderate amount of alcohol is considered by many to be good for the functions of the body but can too much be a threat to healthy skin?

Studies have shown the consumption of alcohol can encourage good cholesterol and so reduce the chances of strokes and heart disease but another effect of alcohol is the dilation of the blood vessels in the skin.

No doubt you will have heard of the story that St Bernard dogs are used to rescue lost climbers in the European Alps. These animals are supposed to carry brandy to revive the victims. This of course is rubbish as the dilation caused by the alcohol actually promotes heat loss and actually causes hypothermia. Think of that when you drink whisky to stay warm.

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol lead to telangiecyasias, a permanent chronic dilation of previously healthy skin. This is why alcoholics generally have a red face.

Alcohol also worsens acne and the redness of the skin called rosacea. The face in particular will suffer from flushing, redness, white spots and pimply bumps.

The excessive consumption of alcohol also causes formerly healthy skin to become more wrinkled and to have more lines. This is because alcohol actually dehydrates the body (another myth destroyed), as does caffeine so those drinks too are to be avoided in excess.

Both caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, which cause us to urinate more often (a common problem on a Saturday night) and this of course further reduces the water in the body.

Interestingly, alcohol is actually a toxin, which is why the liver is damaged in alcoholics. The liver is the organ responsible for dealing with toxins and poisons. Vitamin A, an important anti-oxidant is also depleted by attacks from alcohol.

A study in 1998 found that Americans drink an average of five alcoholic or caffeinated drinks a day. This sort of consumption would easily cancel out the intake of water.

If you are a smoker or perhaps combine sugary or caffeine-rich drinks with alcohol, then the chances of a healthy skin are greatly reduced.

Of course damage to previously healthy skin is not the only problem with excessive alcohol intake. The substance also depletes calcium intake (leading potentially to osteoporosis or brittle bones) and increases the build-up of fat cells (particularly in women) but those are subjects for later articles.

It would be wrong (and unrealistic) to stop the consumption of alcohol altogether, particularly as some consumption may be beneficial, so the obvious recommendation to avoid excessive intake. As with all things, moderation is important in maintaining a healthy skin.

The effects of aging and excess sun on the skin on otherwise healthy skin are well known but there is one pollutant that can have a detrimental effect too. Smoking.

The primary role of the blood is to transport oxygen to the vital organs in the body including healthy skin. One of the byproducts of tobacco smoke is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is absorbed two hundred times more quickly than oxygen and displaces the oxygen in the bloodstream thus starving the vital organs. In excess carbon monoxide kills.

Carbon monoxide also creates extra free radicals in the body, which attack various areas, particularly the skin.

One of the roles of the liver in the body is to neutralize harmful chemicals. If it has to deal with too many it will have to switch from its usual functions to deal with the threat. Just to summarize the livers important functions, it helps process digested food and turns it into energy, controls the level of fats, glucose and amino acids, combats various infections in the body, cleans the body of infections, stores essential chemicals and vitamins, manufactures proteins and enzymes essential to the bodily functions, manufactures bile and of course neutralizes drugs and toxins. We all know smoking produces nicotine, another of the harmful chemicals, and this acts like an adrenaline, restricting the blood vessels to the skin. This further restricts the flow of nutrients and oxygen. Another consequence is wounds are slow to heal.

But it is not just the chemical effects that damage healthy skin. Think about the physical reactions to smoking. Firstly, smokers purse their lips to draw the smoke and this repeated action promotes extreme wrinkles around the mouth. Equally, the eyes are more frequently squeezed shut, both in the action of smoking and in avoiding smoke getting into the eyes. Again, this repeated action creates wrinkles around the eyes.

All of us probably know someone who has spent too long in the sun on a regular basis and is showing premature aging of his or her skin. If you look at a heavy smoker you will see similar effects, except the skin will also look sallow.

Clearly smoking tobacco has a detrimental effect on otherwise healthy skin. Natural supplements and natural beauty products can reverse the signs to an extent but the better option is to not smoke at all.

Vitamin C In Anti Aging Products

Many natural beauty products include vitamin C in their ingredients. What are the advantages of this particular vitamin to healthy skin, especially in those claiming anti- aging properties?

Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, enables the production of collagen and, as we know, collagen is essential to healthy skin. Vitamin C is also a good antioxidant and ensures healthy skin through the scavenging of free radicals. Vitamin C also has benefits to the health of blood vessels and the immune system.

One problem is vitamin C oxidizes easily on contact with the air so good natural beauty products have to carefully formulated to prevent this. You will know if oxidization has occurred as a light brown residue will form around the neck of the container. Oxidized vitamin C loses much of its antioxidant properties.

One way to overcome the problem is to use not vitamin C but a derivative of it but this is less effective on the skin. Pure vitamin C products are therefore usually expensive. This clearly gives manufacturers of natural beauty products a problem but there are quite a few that have solved the problem without making the natural skincare product too dear.

The AIDS/HIV virus is no longer big news but of course it is still a massive problem. At the end of 2009 it has been estimated that 33 million people were living with AIDS and 16 million orphans were created when their parents died of the disease.

During discussions on nutritional health and natural dietary supplements it has been mentioned that certain vitamins and minerals might be good for the immune system. The AIDS/HIV virus is of course an attack on the immune system so surely nutritional health could impact on the treatment or prevention of the disease?

In truth, each AIDS sufferer needs different nutrients so the advice seems to be for them to ensure they eat a balanced diet and then consult a nutritional health specialist who can perhaps recommend a set course of natural dietary supplements suited to the individual.

In many illnesses the sufferers can require more calories than the average person as the body is disrupted by the disease. This is certainly the case with AIDS and is the reason why the loss of body weight is such a problem with them.

Firstly, the virus affects the absorption of nutrients into the gut as it damages the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.

Medications used can often have side effects, which affect the intake of food. Again, vomiting and diarrhoea are possible and the use of antibiotics may kill off beneficial bacteria in the gut. In any case, the disease causes sufferers to lose appetite.

The attack of the AIDS/HIV virus alters the metabolism of the body and the processing and use of nutrients, so affecting nutritional health. In addition the response of the immune system uses more energy. The amount of calories and vitamins and minerals used is therefore greatly increased. Nutritional health can also be damaged by hormonal changes, which are a feature of the disease.

As we have seen previously, nutritional deficiencies damage the immune system and, in the case of AIDS/HIV this simply serves to deepen the damage wrought by the virus. It becomes a vicious circle. A reduction in the vitamins A, C, E and the B complexes as well as minerals selenium and zinc cause particular problems as they affect cell immunity antibodies.

In the treatment of AIDS/HIV, more consideration is now given to nutritional health immediately the diagnosis is made to try to reduce the worst effects of the virus. Let’s hope the more we understand the processes going on, the more we can get closer to reducing the instances and severity of this terrible disease.
